Hello I hope you do not mind me contacting you about something not directly related to your village.
I am in Barnsley South Yorkshire. In the town there is an art gallery called the Cooper Gallery. In 1934 an extension was built to the gallery by kind donation of Mr. Thomas Fox and brothers and sisters in memory of their parents James and Jane Fox.
As a result of some fundingthe gallery is now able to research in more depth its donors and paintings.
I have done some research on the family and think I have established that one of Thomas's children was Mary EvelynAtkinson of Green Gardens Whittington who I believe has some connection with your society?
I wonder if you could confirm if that is the case and if the family still have connections with thevillage? we have not so far been able to trace any photographs of the family although I think there is one of Mary on this website - if I have made the right connections?
with kind regards
Sally Hayles
Thank you so much this is not my mary
Hazy on dates but she was the daughter of thomas fox of barnsley and I would guess born 1890s
She married mr atkinson and I assume moved to whittington area - think associated with womens institute and is on one of your photos ? She had brothers charles and gerald and sisters all not local to you
I have taken the whittington address from some archived solicitors papers in 1974 - by which time she had passed away
Assume active at the green up to abot 1960s?
Regards
In the 1951 Electoral Register I have for Whittington I've found:
Atkinson, Frederick Jeffrey - Green Gardens, The Green
Atkinson, Mary Evelyn - ditto
I'm not sure where Green Gardens was, but the next entry on the register is "North Cottage" which is still there. It was not the present Tudor Cottage as the Lockyers are listed in the register: Mr Lockyer was gardener at the Old Hall and the tied house was Tudor Cottage, two entries away from the Atkinsons.
The other nearest (in date) registers I have are 1936 and 1981 - they don't appear in either of those.
