Styled «b»Marquess of Granby«/b» from 1711, he succeeded to the title in «u»1721 «/u», cutting short a brief career in the «u»House of Commons «/u», where he had represented «u»Rutland «/u» as a «u»Whig «/u».
He held a variety of government and court positions including «u»Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire «/u» 1721 1779, «u»Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster «/u» 1727 1736, «u»Lord Steward of the Household «/u» 1755 1761, and Master of the Horse 1761 1766.
In «u»1717 «/u» he married Bridget Sutton, the 17-year-old heiress of «u»Robert Sutton, 2nd Baron Lexinton «/u». They had eleven children, most of whom died young:
