He enlisted at Westminster, Feb 1871 with the North Staffordshire Regiment, aged 14 a boy soldier.
In Sep 1871 he was transferred to the Royal Irish regiment and appointed drummer and served in Malta from Jan 1872 until Oct 1874.
He bacame Lance Corporal in 1877, Corporal in 1878, Sergeant 1881. He was in Farnborough North Camp, with his wife Mary and son james, age 4 Months, in 1881 census.
Mary had 4 more children, all girls born in Lichfield, between 1885- 1889 but they all died.
Mary died in 1889 in Lichfield. age 31.
James served in the Egypt campaign, from Aug to Dec 1882, and was awarded the Egyptian medal bronze star. He was transferred back to the North Staffs Reg. in 1882-3, he was at Netley, Shorncliffe and Aldershot, and became Colour Sergeant in 1886.
He was in Whittington Barracks with his second wife Lydia, and son Arthur for the 1891 census.
After 23 years he was discharged at Lichfield, in Aug 1894. he was awarded a Long service and good conduct medal.
His address wasGeorge IV hotel 17 Bore Street, for many years. he was a munitions worker when his son died in 1917.
he died in Bore Street late 1924 and was buried in St Michael's churchyard, Lichfield.
