In trying to work out how they met I discovered that Rowland Smith who was Caroline's employer in 1881was living at Duffield Hall when his son Granville was born in 1861. Joseph worked at Duffield Hall in 1881and I wanted to find out if Rowland Smith was still the owner at these times. Unable to do that as he was in Dawlish in Devon in 1871 and at 131 Queens Gate, Kensington in 1881. However, for boht of these censuses there were no 'gentry' ion residence at Duffield Hall so it is possible that he still owned it but didn't spend much timethere. By 1891 Joseph had moved on the Allestree Hall and Caroline to work for a retired clergyman named Algernon Cootes in Tunbridge Wells in Kent. The Smiths were back at 131 Queen's Gate and Duffield Hall was still under a caretaker. In the 1891 Census Caroline's brother George is living in Caledonian Rd with his wife Emma Maria so I think this is where Caroline got married from. This seems to be the way they met and they may well have known one another for quite a while before Joseph could find a position that would allow them to marry.
