Robert was baptized 26 July 1581 in St Andrew, Halstead, Essex, England, the son of William Drake and his wife Joane Webb Merrills/Merrylis of Halstead, Colchester, and Elmstead, Essex, England.
Robert emigrated from the parish of St Giles, Colchester, Essex, England to America ca 1641. He was definitely in Hampton by 1645 when he had pasture there. His sons Abraham and Nathaniel were in New Hampshire ahead of him and signed early documents of the area.
Robert was a serge maker/weaver. He first settled in Exeter, but removed to Hampton about 1650 or 1651. He took the Oath of Allegiance 4 Oct 1653. He was a selectman of Hampton in 1653 and 1664; juror 1653; and grand juror …
His death date is often recorded as 14 Jan 1667/8 but, in using the date of the time, 12 days need to be added making Robert's date of death 26 Jan 1667/8.
Will dated 5 May 1663; Inventory taken 28 Jan 1667; Proved 14 Apr 1668. The following are mentioned in the will of Robert Drake. Children: Nathaniel, Abraham, & Susanna. Grandchildren: Rachel & Jean (Nathaniel); Susanna, Sarah, Mary, Elisabeth, & Hannah (Abraham).
This Robert Drake was not married Joann/Jane Gawton. Documentation supports two Robert Drakes, at the same time, one in New England and one in Virginia. Joann/Jane Gawton was married to the one in Virginia. The memorial for Joann/Jane Gawton number is 49137772.
