Antoine Barrois was born in France circa 1641 (date based on his reported age of 40 in the census of 1681). The name Barrois is a corruption of Berrois and signifies an origin in the French province of Berry. [1] Antoine is said to be the son of Jean Barrois and Marie Tournel, and he is said to have been born in St Nicolas du Chateau, Bourges, Berry, France.[2]
He emigrated to French Canada in the 1660s. His name is first recorded there in a 1667 list of French settlers at Laprairie (i.e., La Prairie de la Madeleine, on the south side of the St. Lawrence River, opposite Montréal). He is listed as "Antoine Barroy," [3] The 1681 census recorded him as 40 years old and a physician, residing at Laprairie.[4]
He was married to Anne Leber at Notre-Dame de Montréal on 12 January 1672. Six children of their marriage were baptized at Laprairie between 13 September 1672 and 16 January 1683. [5]
Antoine sold his property at Laprairie on 16 November 1682. In the fall of the following year the family relocated to Albany, New York, where on 5 November 1683 "Antho. Barwa" requested permission to dwell, on behalf of himself, his wife Annetje Lieber, and their six children. He took the oath of allegiance at Albany on 6 January 1686/7. He died at Albany some time thereafter, and before 20 December 1689, when his widow remarried.[6]
