Notities over Georg I van Eytzing

The family of Eitzing (also spelt Eyczing or Eiczing) came from Upper Austria. They were raised to the nobility in the 15th century and had their family seat in Schrattental (Lower Austria) until 1620. Various members of the family played important roles in the conflicts with the Austrian Estates.

The earliest records refer to four brothers: Ulrich, Oswald, Martin and Stephan. The most prominent member of the family was Ulrich, collector of land taxes under King Albrecht II, raised to the status of baron (Freiherrnstand) in 1439, and leader of the Austrian Estates which brought about the Mailberg Alliance in 1451 which demanded and eventually succeeded in freeing the young Ladislaus Postumus from virtual imprisonment by his uncle Duke Friedrich V, the future Emperor Friedrich III. Ulrich governed Austria for Duke Ladislaus Postumus on behalf of the Estates. In 1434 Ulrich acquired the estate of Schrattenthal on the border between Austria's Waldviertel and Weinviertel, which became the family seat. With further acquisitions he eventually owned estates from the Danube to Moravia.

There is no record of Martin beyond 1425 when he and Ulrich received the estate of Kaja, so it is likely that he died young. Oswald became the lord of the estate of Dosendorf.

Stephan, the youngest of the brothers, and not Oswald, succeeded Ulrich as ruler of the Eitzing estates. Like Ulrich he focused his efforts on expanding them. Emperor Friedrich III became heavily indebted to the family. In 1469 Stephan concluded a large exchange of properties with the Scotch Benedictine monastic movement and received numerous properties in the area of Schrattenthal. Pillersdorf came to Schrattenthal from the parish of Zellerndorf, and the movement handed over the church fief in Obermarkersdorf to the Eitzing family.

In 1468 there were lengthy negotiations at Eggenburg between the emperor and Stephan over various fiefs. The emperor's debts climbed further. In 1472 the currency sank to one twelfth its value. The emperor again turned to the Eitzing family for financial help. An agreement was reached on 13 September 1472. As well as the financial agreements the emperor gave Stephan the following rights for Schrattenthal: the status of a town, its right to a coat of arms, and the right to an annual fair and a weekly market. On 17 September Stephan received further rights for his villages Markersdorf, Pillersdorf, Deinzendorf, Karnegg and Zaingrub.

On 18 September 1472 at Wiener Neustadt Emperor Friedrich III raised the village of Schrattenthal to a town. As a token of the agreement the emperor gave the barons of Eitzing a letter of fief in which he reconfirmed all their estates and the rights to them. These were estates and incomes in the town of Schrattenthal and many villages and other holdings.

Stephan and his wife Catherine von Boskowicz had 16 children, only some of whom are recorded. In 1479 he divided his estates between the two eldest (Georg and Martin) and two youngest sons. One of the youngest sons was Michael; the other is not named. The two eldest, Georg and Martin, received Schrattenthal. A quarrel arose between them which degenerated to such an extent that one of the brothers had his own gate built so as not to meet the other. In the war against the Hungarian king Matthias Corvinus, Schrattenthal was not affected. However, after the end of the war robber bands of deserters roamed the land. Georg, an army commander, captured many and imposed very harsh punishments on them.

At the funeral for Emperor Friedrich III, Stephan carried the emperor's shield. He himself died in 1504. A gravestone in the sacristy of the church at Schrattenthal identifies his final resting place. His son Martin had taken over the running of the Eitzing holdings in 1490. When Martin died in 1512 without progeny, his younger brother Michael inherited from him.
