After a long imprisonment and several postponedexecutions, the three martyrs were beheaded with a sword and their bodies were thrown into the river Seine. The body of St. Dionysius was taken out of the water by his followers and buried. Above hisgrave a chapel was build, which was later on replaced by the abbey of St. Denis. According to legend, after he had been beheaded on the Montmartre, he would have carried his head to the place where he wanted to be buried, later called St. Denis.

The holiday of Dionysius is on October 9, 1483. On that date, a church on the Heike in Tilburg was inaugurated. This church would have stood at about the place of the current Heikese church. That’s how Tilburg came to his patron saint St. Dionysius and it is not so surprising that so many people in that area bear the surname or nickname Denis.
