Gerald Nicholas Battjes was welcomed to his Heavenly home by his loving Lord on Saturday, September 6, 2008. He was a devoted father, beloved grandfather, a new great-grandfather, and a dear friend to many. Jerry was born in Grand Rapids on August 9, 1916 to Nicholas and Gertrude (Van Os) Battjes. He graduated from Calvin College. In 1941, he married his beloved wife, Mildred Smith, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his children, Carol (Walter) Ackerman and John (Barbara) Battjes; his grandchildren, Ann (Joe) Rajewski, Betsy Ackerman, Nicholas (Lindsey) Battjes, Eric (Diane) Battjes, Christine Battjes; his great-grandson, Robert Rajewski; his sister-in-law, Martha Smith; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. He worked for Travelers Insurance and later for Michigan State Health Department. Jerry was active in his church throughout his life. He was a member of Roundtable International and served on the boards of the Christian Rest Home and Hospital Chaplaincy Service. Jerry loved to travel, read, listen to classical music, watch sports, and keep in touch with family and friends. He will be sorely missed by all who loved him and enjoyed his vast supply of jokes and humorous stories. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at Calvin Christian Reformed Church, Rev. Robert Koornneef officiating. Interment Woodlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Zaagman Memorial Chapel. Memorial contributions may be given to Hospital Chaplaincy Service. Zaagman Memorial Chapel
