Montgomerie, John by Thomas Finlayson Henderson
MONTGOMERIE, Sir JOHN, ninth of Eaglesham and first of Eglinton and Ardrossan (d. 1398?), was the only son of Sir Alexander de Montgomerie, eighth of Eaglesham and first of Eglinton and Ardrossan, by a daughter of William, first earl of Douglas. The Montgomeries of Scotland trace their descent from Robert de Montgomerie (d. 1177), a supposed descendant of Roger of Montgomery (d. 1094) [q. v.], who was created Earl of Shrewsbury, and was father of Hugh, earl of Shrewsbury (d. 1098) [q. v.] Robert de Montgomerie accompanied Walter, son of Alan, first high steward of Scotland, from Wales to Scotland, and received from him the manor of Eaglesham, Renfrewshire.
Sir John Montgomerie, ninth of Eaglesham, succeeded his father about 1380, and by his marriage with Elizabeth de Eglinton, sole heiress of Sir Hugh de Eglinton of Eglinton, justiciary of Lothian in 1361, obtained the baronies of Eglinton and Ardrossan. In 1388 he accompanied his brother-in-law, Sir James Douglas, second earl of Douglas [q. v.], in an expedition to England. At the battle of Otterburn, where Douglas was slain, Montgomerie, according to the Scots version of the ballad on the battle, worsted Sir Henry Percy, surnamed Hotspur, the commander of the English, in single combat and took him prisoner. With the ransom of Percy he built at Eaglesham the castle of Polnoon, now in ruins, but long the chief seat of the Eglinton family. In 1391 Montgomerie, for service to the king and the Duke of Rothesay, received an annuity from the customs of Edinburgh and Linlithgow (Exchequer Rolls of Scotland, iii. 280 et seq.) He died about 1398, leaving three sons—Sir John, who succeeded him, and was father of Sir Alexander, first lord Montgomerie [q. v.]; Alexander of Bonnington, and Hugh, shot with an arrow through the heart at Otterburn.

XIV. Sir ALEXANDER de MONTGOMERIE of Eaglesham and Eastwood, succeeded his father. In a charter by David II., dated 1357, he is designed "Alexander de Montgomery de Eglisham, filius Johannis de Montgomery." "He seems to have been a man of ability and trust, .... etc.

married a daughter of William, first Earl of Douglas, by his second wife, Margaret, daughter of the Earl of Dunbar and March, by whom he had a son who succeeded him prior to the year 1388."(1)
XV. SIR JOHN de MONTGOMERIE of Eaglesham and Eastwood, and afterwards of Eglinton and Ardrossan, was the son of Sir Alexander. "He married in 1361, Elizabeth, the daughter and heiress of Sir Hugh Eglinton of Eglinton, and by her obtained the large possessions of that family on the death of her father, which occurred about the year 1374, together with Ardrossan, the heiress of which estate one of her ancestors had married. Sir John quartered with his own the Eglinton arms, which were gules, three rings or, gemmed azure."(2)
The EGLINTONS, whose name furnished a title to a branch of Sir John de Montgomerie's descendants, was a family of much antiquity in Scotland. The first one recorded is

He was Justiciary of Lothian in 1362; and one of the convention, held September 1, 1367, at Muirhouslaw, relative to the affairs of the Marches. He appears to have been twice married; first to the heiress of Ardrossan,(4) possibly the daughter of Sir Fergus of Ardrossan, who was one of the Scottish nobles who accompanied Edward Bruce on his expedition into Ireland, in 1315; which opening with many successes, terminated in disaster to most of those who were concerned in it.(5) Sir Hugh married, secondly Egidia, the daughter of Walter the high Steward, by his second wife, and half-sister of king Robert II., and who was widow of Sir James Lindsay of Craufurd. He had one daughter, Elizabeth, who was the wife of Sir John de Montgomerie. As she is mentioned as the heiress of Eglinton and Ardrosson, it is presumed she was the daughter by the first wife, and that Sir Hugh had no other children; the date also of her marriage is not in favor of the supposition, which has been generally maintained, of her relationship to the king. In 1372, Sir Hugh had a charter from Robert of the lands of Bonnington and Nortoun, and of Westhall and Cotraw; "Dilecto fratri nostro Hugone de Eglyntoun, militis et carissime sorori nostre Egidie de Lyndesay, sponse ejus **** apud Perth. 28 Junii, an reg. 2nd." XVI. Sir JOHN de MONTGOMERIE, "Dominus Ejusdem, or of the Ilk," which title shows he was the male heir and chief of the French house of Montgomerie.
"This ancient and noble title-- That Ilk -- is peculiar to the Scots, and has never been hitherto defined well. It is the title which denotes -- not the gentleman, as Johnson's degrading appellation, (viz., whose surname and the title of his estate are the same,) but also the chief of all the clan of his own surname. Sir John De Montgomerie, second son of Sir John and Elizabeth Eglinton, succeeded to the lands and titles of his father and mother in 1398, and is referred to as eldest male heir and chief of the French house of Montgomerie. He was one of the chiefs of the Scottish army which invaded England in 1402, and was taken prisoner at the Battle of Halidon Hill. Five years later he was in Scotland and introduced the reputed Richard II, of England, to Robert II, of Scotland. On the accession of James I, after his long imprisonment in England, Sir John de Montgomery (2) was among the nobles of high rank who were arrested on suspicion of having profited by their sovereign's imprisonment and brought before the Parliament held at Perth, March 12, 1425. He was, however, released immediately and restored to high favor, being on the the jury to try the Duke of Albany, and was commissioned to reduce the fortress of Lock Lamond, held by Albany's youngest son, James Stewart. He married Margaret, daughter of Sir Robert Maxwell, of Caerlaverock, the ancestor of the Earls of Nithsdale, and died prior to November, 1429, leaving three sons and four daughters. His second son, Sir Robert de Montgomerie, became Knight of Giffen, a barony given by Robert II to Sir Hugh Eglinton, and brought into the Montgomerie family by Robert's grandmother, before men-

He appears to have been twice married; first to the heiress of Ardrossan,(4) possibly the daughter of Sir Fergus of Ardrossan, who was one of the Scottish nobles who accompanied Edward Bruce on his expedition into Ireland, in 1315; which opening with many successes, terminated in disaster to most of those who were concerned in it.(5) Sir Hugh married, secondly Egidia, thedaughter of Walter the high Steward, by his second wife, and half-sister of king Robert II., and who was widow of Sir James Lindsay of Craufurd. He had one daughter, '''Elizabeth, who was the wife of Sir John de Montgomerie. As she is mentioned as the heiress of Eglinton and Ardrosson, it is presumed she was the daughter by the first wife, and that Sir Hugh had no other children; the date also of her marriage is not in favor of the supposition, which has been generally maintained, of her relationship to the king'''. 2nd." He was one of the chiefs of the Scottish army which invaded England in 1402, and was taken prisoner at the Battle of Halidon Hill. His second son, Sir Robert de Montgomerie, became Knight of Giffen, a barony given by Robert II to Sir Hugh Eglinton, and brought into the Montgomerie family by Robert's grandmother, before men- *Pg. 1137 *tioned. Note: Sir John Montgomerie V was married, in 1361 according to one source or in 1372 according to another, to Elizabeth, the daughter and sole heiress of Sir Hugh Eglington of Eglington, one of the two great Justiciaries of Scotland during the reign of David II. Sir Hugh Eglington died in 1376 or 1378, leaving Sir John Montgomerie V the master of Eglington, Egglesham, Eastwood, Thorntoun and Innerwick. Sir John and his son took part in the battle of Otterburnin 1388, where he personally took prisoner the renownwed 'Hotspur', Henry Lord Percy; with the ransom which he received, he built Punone Castle at Egglesham, and had a carved spur over the entry to commemorate this event. He died in 1393, having held the properties for only about five years. His wife Elizabeth of Egglington survived him. They had four sons: Note: Captured Harry Hotspur in the Battle of Otterburn in 1388. The ransom he received for him started the Montgomery fortunes in Scotland, and he became the ancestor of the Earls of Eglington and Lairds of Braidstane. Built the Castle of Polnoon.
