Brinnington adjoins Stockport and was confirmed on Robert fitz Waltheof by Hamon, third Baron of Dunham Massey (ca. 1130 - ?) together with Bredbury and Etchells. It is conjectured that this Robert was the ancestor of the Barons of Stokeport, as they held the same lands directly from the Barons Dunham Massey, but there is no record of any purchase or exchange being effected, only a document reconfirming the grant to Robert of his father Waltheof's lands from the Barons Dunham Massey, with many local witnesses, probably including kinsmen. The reconfirmation is estimated to about 1190. He is also to obligated to make Hamon's son a knight, give a marriage portion to his eldest daughter serve Hamon Massey whenever the Earl of Chester "shall go into Wales."
