Notes
“ Compton Castle, Marldon, Devon”
Joan daughter and heiress of William de Compton married Geoffrey Gilbert. He built this house in around 1320 as a manor house. It was extended in 1450 and extended and fortified around 1500. The main entrance has a portcullis and battlements to the high courtyard wall. It was the home of Sir Humphrey Gilbert the explorer and navigator who annexed Newfoundland in 1583. Sir Humphrey Gilbert was a half brother of Sir Walter Raleigh. Compton was abandoned by the Gilbert family around 1750 and became a farm but it was bought back by them in the 20th century. It was thoroughly restored around 1930-55 and later passed into the care of the National Trust.
“Compton Castle, North Front”
Brief History: The first part of the building, the Great Hall, was built by Joan, daughter and co-heiress of William de Compton who married Geoffrey Gilbert before 1329. By 1750 this part had fallen into ruin and was subsequently reconstructed in 1954/5. The original stone was re-used, as it had been found out to have been used in the interim period to build some cottages nearby.
“Gilberts of Compton”
What is more demonstrable is that the male line leading to the Gilberts of Compton likely rose from obscurity with the marriage of a William Gilbert of Devon to Elizabeth Champernowne of Clist, a descendant of William the Conqueror, sometime in the first few decades of the 13th century. Their great grandson, Sir Geoffrey (Galfried) Gilbert (Member of Parliament for Totnes in 1326) married Lady Joan Compton, heiress of Compton Castle, thereby becoming “of Compton”.[9][10]

“ A brief history of Compton Castle” “ Today Compton Castle is the home of Geoffrey and Angela Gilbert and their family, but the land was originally held by the de Compton family. The marriage of Joan de Compton to Geoffrey Gilbert, in 1329 brought the two families together and the Gilberts have been adding, altering and renovating the castle ever since.”
