Captain William Blackie
Captain William Blackie was born in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, England in 1799. Before immigrating to New Zealand he worked as a shipmaster and started a family with Jane Maitland who he married in 1833.Along with Jane and his five children, he left Greenock, Scotland for New Zealand in September 1849. The family travelled on board the Mooltan in the fore-cabin, the second-class section of the ship.Ten days after leaving port, the Mooltan was struck by a cholera epidemic. The epidemic killed seven passengers and two crewmembers. Fortunately all members of the Blackie family survived and they arrived in Port Chalmers in late December 1849.
Upon settling in New Zealand, William established himself as a pioneer farmer in Caversham. The Blackies Caversham home, named Pleasant Villa, was one of the first four houses built in Caversham Valley and neighbours included fellow Mooltan shipmates, the McGibbons. In 1852 William and John McGibbon attempted to establish a public market for the selling of farm animals and produce. Such a market never emerged as local farmers rarely had extra produce to sell. After welcoming the birth of an additional son in 1853, William faced tragedy in the same year when he lost his eldest son to illness.
In later years William and his family largely settled in East Taieri where innovative farming techniques were implemented. The Otago Witness, for instance, detailed that in 1861 William acquired a steam threshing machine, a modern and expensive piece of technology for the time. As well as farming, William also maintained his status as a mariner, and in 1854 he commanded the schooner Star of Dunedin. Following his death, his daughter Jessie Johnston presented a watercolour featuring her father in command of the schooner to the Otago Early Settlers Association.William died from jaundice in 1862.
