Subject: Gwendoline Hettie Courtnage Hello, my granduncle married Gwendoline Hettie Courtnage 07 Nov 1918 at Camberwell, London. The marriage registration lists her father as Charles Walter Courtnage. She was a Warrent Officer in the Army Service Corps. He was a Private in the Canadian Infantry. They lived, for a time, in Alberta, Canada and then in Yuba City, CA. They had one child. Recently I lost the only living relative that knew her and I cannot, for the life of me, remember her daughter's married name, although if she is living she would be 90. I found a Social Security Death Index but..now how to figure out who Mr. Williams was. Can you help me fill in the blanks? Gwendoline Etty Courtnage was born on 29 July 1898 in the Royal Barracks, Dublin N.I. where her father
Walter Charles Courtnage was stationed while in the army. On her birth certificate (copy) her father's profession
was given as Drum Major 2nd Bedfort Regt. (probably a mistake and the regt is the Bedford.) Her mother was
shown as Bessie Courtnage nee McDonell (McDonald) .
Her father was recalled to go to South Africa 4th Dec 1898 (Boer War) and Bessie and her 2 children Charles,
and Gwennie, went to live in Devonport, where Bessie's mother lived.

After the Boer War, Gwen's family moved around England, as her father was discharged from the Bedfordshire
Regt after 22 yrs service in 1902, and he applied and got the job as Barrack warden, which meant he had to
work in various barracks, and he and his family had to live on the barracks.
Gwen had another 3 brothers born, John Edward was born in Morice Town Devon 30 Augut 1903; Donald
Reuben was born Molton Barracks, Tidworth Hants, 1906, and Gordon (Babe) was born at Devonport 1908.
IN teh 1911 Reading Bewrkshsire Census, , The Courtnages arfe living at 138 Wilson Road, Reading Berks,
where
Gwen's fathers was again working as a Barrack Warden at Brock Barracks, (which was just behind their house).
During the 1914-18 war, Gwen met a Canadian soldier, Herbert Lorenzo Gilmore (b 18 sep 1896) and they were
married, and Gwen joined him in Canada, where their daughter Vivian Laverne Gilmore was born on 20 April
1920 at Didsbury Alberta Canada.
The Gilmore family moved into America (Ohio?) about 1924. Gwen divorced Herbert in 1940. (Herbert
Gilmore died 2 Aug 1972, his social security no. was 554-03-7545.)
Gwen's daughter Vivian married a Bob Hayes,on 13 Feb 1936 in San Fransisco California, (She was nearly 16),
(was Gwen San Fransico also?) Vivian & Bob produced Gwen's only grandchild, a daughter Patricia
Gwendolyn Hayes born 23 May 1938 San Fransisco.
During the war, 1939-45, Gwen used to send her mother parcels of used clothes, which were distributed around

the family., to ease the clothes rationing in Britain.
She then moved to California, San Jose, and married George Williams. No children from this marriage. The
lived in a "mobile" Home Village at San Luis Obisco. California, George died first. (believe he had cancer, he
was in hospital several times. Very expensive.)
She never came back to visit England, and only a short 1 day visit by her brother Gordon Courtnage, (who was
on an American holiday tour) in the 1960's. was all she saw of her family. Her brother Donald, used to write to
her, as did his daughter Gwen (named after her). Later it became phone calls.
Gwen died in October 1983, at San Luis Obispo. California 93401. Her Social Security Number was 552-03-
6854.
When she died she had a daughter,a son in law,a grand-daughter;, 2 great grandaughters: Melodie Joy b 1955
and Kathleen Dawn b 1957 and 1 great,great grandson Brian Richard Saxon b 1977.

Vivian's Grandaughter Kathleen Dawn married first on 17 June 1974 to George Saxon, they had Vivian's great
grandson Brian Richard Saxon b 6 April 1977 . Her second marriage was to Ray Garcia in 1984, in Warren
Ohio, and they had Vivian's great grand-daughter Kourtney Rae Garcia b 26 June 1985.
Her other Grand-daughter Melodie Joy married 25 August 1974 in Calif, a Rob Eaton, and they had Vivians
second great grand-daughter Joey Lynn Eaton born 16 March 1995.
In the meantime Vivian married a second time, Royal F Brown on 18th July 1954. at Reno Nevada,USA, He

Roy loved making musical boxes and he had a "shed" behind the house, where he would work on them.
He was in hospital for four weeks, prior to 8th December 1998, and was coming "home" with a "trac" (to help
him breathe and to stop his throat closing up) needing full time care, His Grand-daughter Kathy was going to
stay with her grandparents and help look after him.(see letter in file) He died peacefully and in no pain, on 14
December 1998.
Vivian loves cats, she has at least 2 that live in the house, and maybe a couple that come into the yard that she
also feeds.
Vivian was heart broken when Roy died. I phoned and wrote to her, then did not hear for a while and a card I
sent on 18 nov 2002 was returned. Un delivered, no forwarding address. When I had the information on how to
find out a death in USA , I had a look on the US Social Security Death Index in 2004. and found:

I think he had served in the American Army and served overseas, either in the Korean war, or the Vietnam war.
He married Vivian Laverne Hays, nee Gilmore (divorcee with a married daughter Patricia Gwendolyn Hays
.) on 18th July 1954 in Reno, Nevada, Usa.

They lived at 1770 Arizona Avenue, Milipitas California 93035. , and after they were retired , Royal used to
make Musical boxes in his "shed" as a past-time hobby.
In November 1993 he had an operation for a spot on his lung, and thankfully it was not Cancer.
He spent some more time in the hospital in 1997, (see letter in file) and again in 1998, (see letter dated 8 dec
1998 in file from Kathy). He did not have too long to live. He died peacefully and in no pain at his home with
his wife beside him, on Monday 14 th December 1998.
