Notities over Thomas Scotton

Hi,
I have today received the two certificates I sent for and think I have got to grips with Thomas. Unfortunately it means I shall have to delete a large chunk of the Scotton family tree I have on my computer. I have Family Historian software and maybe instead of deleting the bits I have wrong, I'll start a new tree altogether and then if I later find a relationship with some of the Scottons on the wrong tree I won't have to look everything up again. If I have misled anyone I apologise.
Back to Thomas: He is not the son of farmer John and Mary Scotton. Their son was the one who married Harriett Thurston See.
I think the birth certificate I sent for is for the right Thomas. He was born 25 Dec.1845 at Ullesthorpe, the illegitimate son of Emma Scotton. The father is not given. This is obviously where I have gone wrong as I have been trying to find a father called Scotton, which is why I thought he must belong to John as he didn't seem to fit with anyone else. I was never very happy about it though as not everything gelled.
I think I have managed to trace Emma. She was born in Ullesthorpe on 21st November 1828 and christened at Claybrooke on 5th July 1829. Her parents were Thomas and Sarah Scotton. In the 1841 census she is 12 and living in Ullesthorpe with mother and older sister both called Sarah. Presumably father Thomas has died.
In 1849 Emma married a Simeon Smith at Leamington, Warks and in the 1851 census they are living there with Thomas aged 5 and new baby James. At this point Thomas is down as Thomas Smith, not Thomas Scotton.
In the 1861 census Emma and Simeon are still living in Leamington with James now 10 and three younger daughters but there is no sign of Thomas, who would have been about 15. I have had a quick look under Thomas Smith and Thomas Scotton but haven't found him yet. Perhaps he has already gone to London as he marries there three years later. He would have been 18 and 3/4 when he married, not 20 and 3/4 as it says on the marriage certificate. I suspect he knew his birthday (particularly with it being Christmas Day), but didn't really know how old he was. I can't see any point in him deliberately putting a couple of years on his age unless he made himself over 21. As you know, he married Elizabeth Champion and we can pretty much follow him through to his death after that.
As for Emma, in 1871 she is still in Leamington with Simeon, and apparently with three sons George 20, James 9 and John 7. I think George and James have been transposed as James would have been about 20. The three daughters are not living with them but I haven't yet tried to trace them.
Simeon dies in Leamington in 1874 and there is a death for an Emma Smith of the right age in the same area in 1883, which might be Thomas's mother. I haven't managed to find Emma yet in the 1881 census. (She could have remarried of course and be under a totally different name.)
As far as Emma's parents are concerned, there was a Thomas Fitswilliam Scotton born in the area in 1803 and christened at Claybrooke but I am not convinced that this is Emma's father as this Thomas's father was a Nathaniel Scotton and that name doesn't seem to have come down our branch of the family at all. There is also a Thomas Scotton that married a Sarah Smith at Bitteswell Dec. 1815 who may or may not be Emma's parents. I suspect not.
Anyway, that's as far as I have managed to get in the time available to me this afternoon. Please, please do look at the above with a critical eye and tell me if you think I've got it completely wrong again. When I can get to the scanner and the other computer I will let you have a copy of the birth cert. By the way, Stan, the name on it is just Thomas not Thomas William.
