The Citterio family arrived from Milano with Amos Citterio arriving on the day of Queen Victoria's funeral and for the rest of his life would claim "When I arrived in this country it was closed"! Noel Citterio was born in France at Christmas on his way to England and his birth was originally registered there. Having served in France with the British Army during the first world war he went to France during the 1920's only to be arrested for 'Failing to do his National Service'.
All the mail members of the Citterio family served in the British army either in the First or Second World Wars and all came through unscathed. It was at the time of the Second World War that the male side of the family changed their names. The favoured surname became 'Cittern' to anglosize the name as there was a lot of anti-Italian feeling about.
