CHARLES SIDNEY ISAAC RUSSELL VERSUS MAURICE JAMES STREAK. STARTING 19670000 ENDING 19670000 Info from Marilyn (RUSSELL) TERRY Charles Sydney Isaac RUSSELL, commonly called Syd RUSSELL, second son of Isaac RUSSELL, was born in Lurgan, Northern Ireland, on 22nd November 1906. The family home was Drumgor, which had been established in Elizabeth 1st's time, when so many North of England people were transplanted into Ireland. When his father came out to South Africa in 1911, the family home was sold, and his mother, and the rest of the family, came out on the Walmer Castle and landed in Cape Town in December 1912. The RUSSELL clan settled in Germiston and Syd went to the Germiston Central School, the Germiston South, and matriculated from the Germiston High in 1923. He joined George Pirie as an apprentice in May 1924 and qualified in November 1928, earning the Dux Gold Medal as the best student. This was the last time the Gold Medal was awarded, because the Transvaal Pharmacy Board was superceded by the S A Pharmacy Board. After qualifying Syd became relief manager for B Owen Jones Ltd and was posted to Nelspruit which had been opened in 1922. Syd was so impressed by the Lowveld, that when B Owen Jones decided to sell all their country branches, he persuaded his old firm to buy the business, as long as he was to be the manager. Syd arrived in Nelspruit on March 23rd, 1930, and immediately joined the Golf Club. He became the Secretary, then a Committee Member, then Captain - a position he held 21 times, was Club Champion 7 times, and was then President for 7 years. In April 1949 Syd decided to buy the business from George Pirie and ran it as 'Russells the Chemists' which he has been doing ever since. In 1940 Syd was elected to the Town Council, becoming Mayor in 1943 and 1944. He served on the Council till 1956. Syd has one son, Neill, who was born in 1936 and qualified as a chemist in 1960. Neill is married to Dorothy, and has 4 children. Neill is in the business of 'Russells the Chemists' In 1973 Syd broke his ankle, and, as golf was out, turned to deep-sea fishing. Elected President of the Billfishers Club - the most exclusive fishing club in the world - Syd has caught his marlin. In June 1962 Syd was selected as Chairman of the local Board of Directors of the United Building Society. He served in this capacity for 18 years and was retired at the age of 73. In 1952 the Nelspruit Rotary Club was founded, and Syd was a Charter Member, representing Pharmacy. He has not been an active member since his firm was kicked out of the O K Complex in 1977, because he was unable to attend the lunches because he had to do duty at the Legal and General Branch between 1 pm and 2 pm. Syd decided that the climate of the Lowveld did not justify wearing a collar and tie and a suit, so he decided to go to work in white shorts, white jacket, white stockings and white shoes, and has been known to the public of Nelspruit and the Lowveld as "The Man in White" Syd intended to retire in 1977, but when 'Russells the Chemists' were forced to leave the O K Complex, he had to make a 5 year plan to get the business on an even keel again. When the 5 years were up, he had to make another 5 year plan, to try and get the business to where it would have been, if he had not been forced to leave the O K Complex. So no retirement !!! 12 Dec 1986 article in 'Die Laevelder' Well-known personality turns 80 years old ......
