Hugh was born in 0890 in Near Dieppe, France.1 Hugh's father was Malahule Eysteinsson and his mother was Maud of Flanders. His paternal grandparents were Earl of More Eystein (The Noisy, Glumra) Ivarsson and Countess of Oppland Ascrida Rognvaldsdottir; his maternal grandparents were Arnolph of Flanders I and Alice de Vermandois. He had a brother named Richard. He had two half-brothers named Richard and Ralph.
