John Ashton or Assheton was born about 1498. He was one of many Crown Auditors during the reign of King Henry the VIII of England. A court jester by the name of Will Somer made some jokes about the Crown Auditors, calling them "frauditors." This jest received plenty of laughs and is still in the annals of the history of the time.
A book regarding the Letters and Papers during the reign of King Henry VIII, cites John Assheton who died in 1542 as an "Auditor of Purchased Lands."[1]
John Ashton or Assheton was married to Elizabeth Somer, the daughter of John Somer MP of Sandwich and Alice Harman of Crayford, Kent. It is unknown whether the court's fool Will Somer was related to Elizabeth Somer. However, the name is the same and the Somer family was in service to the crown, so probably the two were related.
John Ashton or Assheton passed away in 1542. At the time of his death, he had but one surviving heir, a 15 year old daughter named Elizabeth Ashton or Assheton.
