A memorial gathering of friends will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012 in the Sartinville United Methodist Church for Mrs. Carol Joy Swartz, 81, of Mt. Vernon, Ill., who died Saturday, April 28, 2012 in Mt. Vernon, Ill. Interment of ashes will be in the Sartinville Cemetery. Bro. Dennis Calcote will officiate at the services.She was born Nov. 18, 1930 in Columbia to the late Houston Alonzo and Gussie McKinley Mobley. She was an elementary school teacher, a member of the Red Hat Society and a member of First United Methodist Church where she was involved in the choir and the United Methodist Women. She married the Rev. Ernest Philip Swartz on June 7, 1953, who preceded her in death on Nov 6, 2002.In additions to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a half-brother, Charles Houston Mobley, and half-sister, Kathryn Augusta Wilkinson.Survivors include her son, John Philip Daniel Swartz (Darlene Kaye) of Mamou, La.; daughter, Sharon Joy Martinek (Kenneth Eugene) of Mt. Vernon, Ill.; three grandchildren, Jennifer Kaye Martinek of Mt. Vernon, Ill., Christopher Michael Martinek of Springfield, Ill., and Danielle Michelle Swartz of Tylertown; two great grandchildren, Santana Rose McBeth and Suzanne Michelle McBeth; brothers-in-law, Charles Wilkinson of Raleigh, N.C., and Morris Swartz (Matha) of Raymond; sisters-in-law, Dorris Swartz Meadows of Cross City, Fla., Altha Mae Swartz Jennings (J.C.) of Cartersville, Ga., and Jeanette Barns Swartz of Boyce, La., and several nieces and nephews.Memorials can be made to the First United Methodist Church of Columbia or Sartinville United Methodist Church.The Columbian-Progress - CAROL JOY SWARTZ 81 Mt Vernon Ill
