Violet Mary Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound DStJ (28 May 1889 – 3 January 1965) was an English aristocrat. She was the daughter of an Earl and married twice, first to Lord Charles Petty-Fitzmaurice, and then to John Jacob Astor, 1st Baron Astor of Hever, and the mother of five children, including George Petty-Fitzmaurice, 8th Marquess of Lansdowne, and Gavin Astor, 2nd Baron Astor of Hever.[1]

Early life
Violet Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound was born on 28 May 1889. She was the third of five children born to Mary Caroline (née Grey) and Gilbert Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, 4th Earl of Minto, who served as the Governor General of Canada and the Viceroy and Governor-General of India.[2] Her younger brother, Victor Gilbert Lariston Garnet Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, succeeded their father as the 5th Earl of Minto.
Her paternal grandparents were William Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, 3rd Earl of Minto, and Emma (née Hislop) Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, daughter of General Sir Thomas Hislop, 1st Baronet.[3] Her maternal grandparents were British Army officer Charles Grey (the second son of Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey) and Caroline Eliza (née Farquhar) Grey (daughter of Sir Thomas Harvie Farquhar, 2nd Baronet).[3]
Personal life
On 20 January 1909, she married Lord Charles Petty-Fitzmaurice, the younger son of the Henry Petty-FitzMaurice, 5th Marquess of Lansdowne, and Maud Evelyn Hamilton. Before the death of her husband, who was killed in action on 30 October 1914 while fighting in World War I, they were the parents of two children:

George Petty-Fitzmaurice, 8th Marquess of Lansdowne (1912–1997), who married four times and became the father of Charles Petty-Fitzmaurice, 9th Marquess of Lansdowne.
On 28 August 1916 she married John Jacob Astor V (1886–1971), youngest son of William Waldorf Astor, 1st Viscount Astor, and Mary Dahlgren Paul. Astor was one of the largest stockholders in the London Times.[4] Together, they had three sons,[5] and lived at Carlton House Terrace.[6]
Gavin Astor, 2nd Baron Astor of Hever (1918–1984), who married Lady Irene Haig, youngest daughter of Douglas Haig, 1st Earl Haig, and Dorothy Maud Vivian, and had five children including John Jacob "Johnny" Astor VIII
Lt.Col. Hon. Hugh Waldorf Astor (1920–1999), who married Emily Lucy Kinloch, a niece of Diana Vreeland, and had five children.
Hon. John Astor (1923–1987), who married Diana Kathleen Drummond, a grandniece of Herbert Samuel Holt, and had three children.
Her husband was elevated to the Peerage on 21 January 1956 when he was created Baron Astor of Hever, of Hever Castle.[7] The Astors moved from England to France in 1962. Astor supported Neville Chamberlain.[8]
She died on 3 January 1965 in her villa at Pégomas, near Grasse.[4] Lord Astor died on 19 July 1971.
