* Shoolem Ettinger, 84, dies: was tough-minded Zionist
** Shoolem Ettinger of the Leon Tailoring Co. and a leader in the Zionist Movement nationally, died Saturday at the age of 84.
** Funeral services were conducted Monday by Rabbi Michael Goldberg at Aaron-Ruben-Nelson Meridian Hills Mortuary
** burial in Shaarey Tefillah Cemetery.
** Mr. Ettinger was offered the opportunity to run for the vice presidency of the Zionist Organization of America a number of years ago, but declined.
** He had been president of the Ohio Valley Zionist Region, and during the war which led to the creation of Israel he was active in the campaign to provide arms and personnel for the fledgling Israeli armed forces.
** In the local community he limited his activities to Hooverwood on whose board he served and the maintenance of its kashrut was his principal concern.
** He was a member of Shaarey Tefillah Congregation where his word usually was dominant.
** He also was on the board of the Hebrew Academy.
** Under his direction, Leon Tailoring became the leading local company in its field and the firm was proud of its patronage by top Indianapolis leadership, from elected officials to sports figures.
** Mr. Ettinger’s brother, Eli, died a few years ago as did his wife, Hilda, who was a leading figure in Hadassah in her day.
** *A daily newspaper erred in saying he was a member of the board of The National Jewish Post and Opinion. He was a close friend of the P-O's publisher.
