Rabbi Levinson was a son-in-law of Rabbi Shlomo MaHarsha”of Shavel. Rabbi Shlomo had a small yeshiva in Shavel where his talmidim learned for Semicha.
Rabbi Shlomo had four daughters:
- His oldest, Shayna Rivka, married Rabbi Aba Chaim Levinson.
- Another daughter, Fruma Bryna, is my second great-grandmother making “R. Shlomo MaHarsha” my third great-grandfather.
R. Abba Levinson had a large library that was given to the yeshiva in St. Louis when he passed away. Bentzion Turin has been searching for this library for many years as is looking for his ggg grandfather’s seforim so I can re-print them. Shavel was destroyed by the russians and if any of R. Shlomo MaHarsha’s seforim survived they would have been in Rabbi Abba Chaim Levinson’s library. According to R. Abba Chaim’s daughter, a sefer of Hespedim was published.
Rabbi Abba Chaim Levinson was very close to R. Zacharya Yosef Rosenfeld, chief rabbi of St. Louis. Rav Levinson wrote a very warm haskoma to Rav Rosenfeld’s sefer, “Tikvas Zecharya”, which was on hilchos carrying on shabbos. Maybe they became close during the time that Rav Rosenfeld spend in Baltimore prior to moving to St. Louis. Rav Rosenfeld died 3 years after Rav Levinson and when the community in St. Louis decided to start a yeshiva in Rav Rosenfeld’s honor “Yeshiva Rabbi Zachariah Joseph” the Levinson family donated the seforim to the new yeshiva. The St.Llouis yeshiva closed in the 1960’s. Some have surmised that the chief rabbi of st. louis in the 1960’s may have taken the seforim and donated them to a yeshiva in Israel. If you google “Rabbi Zecharya Joseph Rosenfeld” you will find information about the yeshiva established in his name.
Rabbi Abraham Levinson became the chief rabbi at the B’nai Russian Synagogue in Baltimore and his obituary in 1912 described, among his achievements, that he had presided over the Goldman’s divorce. Emma Goldman, was an anarchist political activist and writer. She played a pivotal role in the development of anarchist political philosophy in North America and Europe in the first half of the 20th century. Like Rabbi Abraham Levinson, born in Kovno, Russian Empire (now Kaunas, Lithuania) to a Jewish family, Goldman emigrated to the United States in 1885. Attracted to anarchism after the Haymarket affair, Goldman became a writer and a renowned lecturer on anarchist philosophy, women's rights, and social issues, attracting crowds of thousands. * In the 1880s, Rochester’s orthodox Jewish communities permitted divorce, according to Rabbi Laurence A. Kotok, Temple B’rith Kodesh’s current rabbi. The process known as bet din, a Rabbinic Court, was, according to records, presided over by Rabbi Abraham Levinson, the chief rabbi at the Beth Israel Russian Synagogue.
* The synagogue had built a new facility in 1886, later known as the Leopold Street Congregation. Rabbi Levinson later became the chief rabbi at the B’nai Russian Synagogue in Baltimore and his obituary in 1912 described, among his achievements, that he had presided over the Goldman’s divorce. The Leopold Street Congregation, a shining monument to the Jewish community in downtown Rochester, is still standing on Harrison Street in downtown Rochester.
