Dear Ann,I'm interested in the history of the Borleis family, since one of my primary ancestors is Wasmuth Borleis, baptized March,2nd, 1656 in Weimar (Ahnatal, near Kassel (Hessen) in Germany, not the famous Weimar, by the way, but a smaller one). His grandson Johann Ludwig, born April, 25th, 1747 in Zierenberg (Hessen), emigrated to the Netherlands before April 1779, where he married Arendina Hofman, a girl from Zutfen, and settled himself as a blacksmith in the 'Oude Kennissteeg' in the historical nucleus of Amsterdam. He spelled his surname 'Bohrleis', but changed it almost immediately in 'Boerlijst' (the official surname of all his 8 children), and so it stays until now. There never were many Boerlijst's in Holland, and farmost of them are born, and stayed, in Amsterdam.
The name Borleis is still alive in Kassel, as well as in Zierenberg, and I've been notified that there is still a farm in Weimar called Borleis.
The origin of this surname is unknown, but I guess it's a mediaval toponym. I found it in the following lemma:
Maurits Gysseling, Toponymisch woordenboek van Belgi, Nederland, Luxemburg, Noord-Frankrijk en West-Duitsland (vr 1226), dl 1, p.166, Belgisch Interuniversitair Centrum voor Neerlandistiek, 1960.
Borlez: Hu(y) :: Bosleirs, 1034 cop. ong. 1700, Ie(per) L(ille) 2 ro en 3 ro; 1044 cop. id., ib. 5 vo, - Buslers, Bosleis, ong. 1104 cop. fin 12e, Av C 1 ro - Borleis, 1196, I V 13. Germ. busku - m. "fourr"? + hl???eri - n. terrain margageux bois. Le village (Borlez) est situ ????i cot d'une lgre dpression.
Gysseling based his toponymic dictionary on all toponyms he found in the available mediaval manuscripts (until 1226) in Belgium, Holland, France, Luxemburg, and Western Germany). I found 'Borleis' accidently as a variant of the Belgian Borlez in this book, but never checked the manuscript in question, wherein Borleis is mentioned.
On internet I've seen that there are quite a lot Borleis in the US, I never contacted one of them. I'm of course interested where they come from. Maybe you know more. Best wishes, Ger Boerlijst.
