the name and approximate year of birth comes from the 1880 census; Maggie, a diminutive of Margaret, is not listed in the 1870 census, which is puzzling (although there are other errors with the census). If Simon and Rosa were married in 1867 as the Illinois records indicate, she probably was not an offspring of their marriage together. Simon may have been married once before: an early letter, probably from early 1863 (but certainly no later than that), indicates he was planning to marry at that time (whether he did or not at that time is unknown). If he was married before, Maggie could have been a child of that first marriage, the mother died, and Maggie was sent to live elsewhere for a time, before being brought back into her father's household with Rosa.
