BIOGRAPHY:Generally knownlocally as Albinus. He served his apprenticeship as a tailor in Malton gained a reputation as a cricketer whilst playing in the Wednesday league, later playing for Pudsey and York as a professional.
Served in the Green Howards 1915 -1918, 28332 Private Freer J.R.A. seeing service in France and Italy, being wounded in the foot during the battle for the river Piave at "Monte Belluno"
Spent most of his career as "The man from the Pru." insurance agent for the Prudential Insurance Co. and was a familiar figure cycling round the villages out as far as Flaxton Sand Hutton and Claxton on his rounds.
BIOGRAPHY: Apprentice tailor at Malton. Subsequently played cricket for Malton Wednesday league, Old Priory York, York City & later professional with Pudsey, returning to amateur with New Earswick. The order and dates are yet to be established. Gave up tailoring to join the Prudential Assurance Company Ltd. as an agent and with whom he stayed until his retirement.
28332 Private J.R.A.Freer served in the 1st World War in France & Italy as batman to Lt. R. H. Akers of the 9th Yorkshire Regiment (Green Howards) who was also an employee of the Prudential as a District Office clerk at Bolton.
He was wounded in the foot in August 1918 on the Asiago Plateau in Northern Italy and Lt Akers himself was later wounded, losing a leg. The two men met again after the war. source Prudential Ass. Co. staff history of the Great War.
