She was born to second generation Dutch nationals, working as a ferry boat director serving in the Dutch Colonial Army.

izing: border-box; margin: 30px 0px 10px; line-height: 1.5; font-size: 17px;">At the breakout of WWII in 1942, her family was interned in a Japanese prisoner of war camp upon their occupation of the Dutch East Indies. The camp shaped her personality of being thrifty, strong and in charge. After the war was over in 1945, the Dutch were advised to leave the country as the native population sought toavenge colonial rule and become its own country of Indonesia. Her family then repatriated to the Netherlands, where the kids strived to catch up on their education and the lost years of war. Eight years later, Helen met an American exchange student, Thomas Westarp, got married and emigrated to the US in 1953. There she and Tom raised three children in both New Jersey and North Carolina. She graduated from UNC Charlotte in 1989 with a BA in English. She was a member of the Levine Senior Center, enjoyed reading, sewing, traveling, playing bridge and completing the crossword puzzle in the Charlotte Observer every morning.
