RIVAL
Rival was constructed in Th. J. Fikkers yard in Foxhol in 1928.
Registration Number 697 B Gron 1928. (Her first Meetbrief showed her number as (Groningen) 2584 and was dated 4 April 1928)
Rival, a steilsteven, was built by the shipyard, at their own risk and when finished they had to find an owner by themselves.
Nieveen Family owned Rival from 1928 to 1951 (Johan & Tjaard)
Tjeerd nieveen was born 13 July 1889 in Zwolle.
Tjeerd Nieveen didnt order the yard to build Rival but he bought her when she was for sale.
Nieveen transported all different kind of cargo, to get the work he went to an exchange of cargo. It was common at that time for every schipper to trade this way and the exchange was a fair & honest way of cargo distribution.
Every year, during the beet-sugar campaign in Groningen Tjeerd transported beets.
Tjeerd also took Rival to Germany.
The home-port was Westerhaven, Groningen.
De Weered Family owned Rival from 1951 to 1963 (Johan Pascal aunt k
Egbert de Weerd (Kee, wife)owned Rival from 1951 till 1957 he converted Rival to a Motor Barge and added the wheelhouse.
4 cilinder MWM van 54 PK , maybe there was a Bronsmotor before the MWM,
Albert de Weerd, a brother of Egbert de Weerd owned Rival from 1957 till 1963.
The home-port was Oosterzee, Friesland.
Schippers Family owned Rival from 1963 to 1991 (Wim)
Jan Schippers, born in 1924, the last schipper of the Rival as a cargo vessel.
He was a son of a schippers family from the Achterhoek-, this is a part of the east of the Netherlands, near Almelo and Vroomshoop. This is the same area where the family of the father of Tjeerd Nieveen came from originally.
The father of Jan Schippers was a turf schipper-, he transported turf or peat.
J.Schippers himself transported mostly fertilizer (agricultural) from the Hoogovens near IJmuiden (now its called CORUS) to cooperative of farmers.
Jan Schippers chaged the motor: 6 cilinder Volvo Penta van 125 PK,
As the last Dutch owner he converted Rival into a houseboat and lived on it by himself, till he sold Rival in 1991.

Rivals third Meetbrief showed her number as (Amsterdam) 3164 and was dated 19 March 1987
Rival was brought over from Holland by R Weldon (Dutch Barges Ltd) Hoo Marina Vicarage Lane Hoo Rochester Kent and sold to John Sangster in 30 Sept 91/ 5th June 1992

Damien Henderson Fords Wharf Boatyard, Allington, Nr Maidstone Kent ME16 OPB sold the vessel to Richard Henderson Fords Wharf Boatyard, Allington, Nr Maidstone Kent ME16 OPB on 1st Dec 1998
Richard Henderson sold the vessel to CJ Taylor & John R Murray-Burrows on 22 May 2000.
We purchased RIVAL from John R Murray-Burrows (Buz) on 13 June 2003 where it was being used as a houseboat in Canary Wharf London.

The good newsis that Johan found two pictures and a certificate of ownership from 1928 and a small log-book 1937 t/m 1949.
It only contains the number of year and the place where the boat was at that time.
Hij is getrouwd met Pietertje Willems Timmer.
Zij zijn getrouwd op 16 november 1916 te Groningen , hij was toen 27 jaar oud.Bron 1
