In 1848, at the age of twenty, John Philip came to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and visited his aunt Mrs. Philip Best, whose husband operated the Philip Best Brewing Company. John Philip, later known as Philip, entered the employ of the Best Brewery and was a foreman there for many years. A close associate of his was Valentine Blatz who worked in the Best Company at that time. Mrs. Philip Best married Frederic Pabst, who purchased the Best Company.
Philip and a relative names Obermann organises and caaried on a brewery on tupper Third street in Milwaukeewith cellars in hillside near Burleigh straat. Civil war times were detrimental for several years and they finally sold the brewery.
At 28 years of age, Philip of the Obermann-Knippenberg brewery married Magdalena Maria Jung of Mayfield, Washington County, near Jackson, Wisconsin at the Ludwig Jung farm house.
Magdalena's sister, Elisabeth Jung Martin lived on the Ludwig Jung family home and became well known around Mayfield and throughout Washinton County for her many good works. The Jung parents retired and moved to Milwaukee.
The Philip family of wife and then 3 children moved to Janesville, Wisconson in 1861 and built a home at 106 Hickory Street (now Harding Street). Philip was associated for many years with James Blair in the lumber business, and later with Fifields Brothers Lumber Company, which was located where Janesville's city Hall now stands.
The family attended nearby Trinity Episcopal Church. The reverend Maclean, reverend Slidell and reverend Henry Willman, being rectors in charge, were very attentive to the large (14) Knippenberg family/ Also senior Warden JohnThoroughgood (who was also mayor of Janesville) attended.
