Migrated to Australia with Gerarda his wife in 1955.
They arrived in Melbourne on the passenger liner called the Johan Van Oldenbarneveldt on 12th April 1955 aged 24 and 20yrs respectively. Their occupations were listed on the passenger list as Farmer and Home Duties. They came to Australia under a scheme called the 'Father Maas Scheme'. He was a Dutch Catholic priest who worked for the migrants in Australia. He met the boats as they arrived and he found work and accomodation for them. The Netherlands Government attempted to resolve pressing economic problems after the second WW and first sponsored emmigration in 1946. However their loss of their Indonesian Empire in 1949 and their control of two of their most important imports of coffee and cocoa compounded their economic problems and they tried to resolve these with industrialisation and emmigration. The soldiers coming back from Indonesia were entitled to the available jobs first. At the same time, the first school leavers since WWII were coming out of school and university and also needed work. People started to look elsewhere and The Government subsidised language and retraining courses to prepare people for emmigration. In 1951 The Australian Government signed an agreement to accept a proportion of non Brittish immigrants selected on the basis of vacancies for their skills in Australia. Every migrant needed to have 50 pounds landing money, which was enough for rent and to keep themselves for two weeks in which time they were supposed to have found work.
