In July 1845 Johannes Hoefsmit (son of the miller of the Mill on the Bijlhouwerstoren) received permission to set up a runmill on the Houtenseweg. Even before the construction started, he wanted to turn it into a flour mill. Despite objections from the other flour millers, he eventually received permission from the government. Hermanus and son Johannes Hoefsmit bought a piece of land next to the Rotswijk mansion and each owned half of the new mill. In 1848 the son bought the part off his father. In 1852 Joris Ambrosius Boereboom became half owner. Because Hoefsmit could not meet his financial obligations, a few years later his half was sold to Andries Boereboom through an auction. The other half went to Dirk Andries Boereboom in 1869. On July 2, 1884 the mill burned down as a result of a lightning strike, a steam mill was built to replace it. This was demolished in 1925 due to the construction of a residential area.
