Obituary : Ventura County Star (excerpt)
Jacobus "Jack" Joannes Lagas, 89, died peacefully in his sleep on Sept 25, 2006, from complications of Parkinson's disease.
Jack entered the world on Feb 5, 1917 in Amsterdam, at the home of his parents, Jacobus and Laurentia La Bastide Lagas. Throughout his youth, he applied himself fully to boyhood interests and obligations, including ham radio operation and construction, schooling, bridge, skating, tennis, soccer, bicycling and mechanics. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in math, and through ongoing coursework became employed by the Dutch government as a certified public accountant. At the age of 22, Jack became engaged to Bonnie Giltay, marrying her during World War II on June 25, 1941. The births of two sons followed soon thereafter. Robert was born in 1942 and John in 1944.
The hardships of surviving war, four months of internment in a labour camp and the five-year Holland occupation motivated Jack to immigrate to the United States with his young family in 1951. After nine years on the East Coast, Jack accepted a job offer in California in 1960. It was truly the Golden State from his perspective. He prospered in a 25-year career at Systems Development Corp (Unisys), combining his passion for math and mechanics through the evolving use of computers for military defense applications.
After the sudden loss in 1970 of his wife, Bonnie, Jack later met and married his current wife, Nancy Olsen, a widowed mother of four children. The bicentennial marriage of Jack and Nancy Lagas not only created a larger family but also brought immense happiness and excitement for them, spanning more than 30 years.
As a resident of Ventura County since 1981, Jack worked at Unisys (formerly SDC) in Camarillo until his retirement in 1985. Jack's love of travel, knowledge of four languages and his expertise in cyberspace contributed to his success as a travel agent during his postretirement years. Jack was predeceased by his first wife Bonnie, and younger son John.
Jack leaves a legacy to his surviving family, including his wife Nancy; son Bob (wife Mary) Lagas; daughters, Tineke Lagas, Nancy Olsen, Mary (husband Steve) Strain and Patty (husband Bill) Knutson; grandchildren, Diane (husband Cameron) Yeats, Michael Lagas, David (wife Gehan) Lagas, Cathy Lagas, Jason Lagas, Katherine Knutson, Gordon Knutson, Matthew Knutson, Andrew Strain and Shannon Strain; as well as two great-grandchildren, Jared R. Lagas and Jack W. Lagas.
Jacobus married Nancy Elizabeth Harris 31 Jan 1976 in Los Angeles.
