Notities over Nicolaas Peter Joseph Daamen

Nicolaas was an art collector, was very musical (baritone and conductor of the Heikese choir), secretary of the Liedertafel 'Souvenir des Montagnards', director of the NK Harmonie. He wrote fairy tales and braille for the blind children from the asylum. He had his book "Sprookjes van grootvader - een man, een man, een woord, een woord" anonymously published in Amsterdam circa 1915. He donated his income to charitable institutions. Also known as Oom Klaas and de oude Klaas Daamen.

In October 1886 N Daamen was granted a Nuisance Act permit for a 'mechanical wool laundry, fluffing plant, etc' in which raw wool is washed, dried and fluffed.

In 1888 the laundry on the east side is expanded with a wool plot. The operation of the plot is described in the application for the Nuisance Act permit as 'Treating sheepskins in the same way as to remove the wool and further prepare, colour, dry, etc of the skins themselves'. The factory has a steam boiler of 50 and a steam engine of 40 hp. The company employs about 12 people: at the start only men and boys, later the ratio of men to women becomes approximately equal.

In 1904 the Tilburgsche Wolwasscherij N Daamen & Co continued in the Tilburgse Wolwasserij, NV. Its purpose is to "continue the laundry of woollen and related articles, until now operated under the firm of Tilburgsche Wolwasscherij N Daamen & Co".

Nicolaas (Klaas) Peter Joseph Daamen lived at Wolstraat (from 1881). Before he founded the wool laundry, he was a bookkeeper. The address book of 1881 states that he is a wool merchant, but he is also listed as: general fire chief and secretary of the fire brigade, 1st lieutenant quartermaster of the Schutterij, 1st lieutenant and secretary of the Schuttersraad, secretary of the Royal recognized society Liedertafel Souvenir des Montagnards and secretary of the (subsidised special) music school in the Heuvel district. In addition, he was the author of, among other things, a Handschrift cq. glossary in the Tilburg dialect and of fairy tales (under the name 'Grandfather').
