Notities over Leonardus Nicolaas Knegtel

The history of the Knegtel family, at the time still written as Knechtel, goes back to Parchen in German Bohemia. When Joseph Christoph Knechtel travelled through Europe with his cart, drawn by two horses, to sell his merchandise, he arrives in Tilburg, in the Botermans inn (de Gouden Zwaan op d'n Heuvel, where the Hema later used to be). In 1746 he married Johanna Cornelia Botermans and settled in Tilburg. In 1751 they open a shop selling snuff and tobacco, where he carved the tobacco himself. The name Knechtel was also written as Knegtel and it would remain so. Many descendants succeeded Joseph in the tobacco trade.

The wine trade was not born until 1865 when Leonardus established himself in the Zomerstraat with a tobacco brewery annex trade in wines and spirits. This company grew to such an extent that after twelve years they had to look for a larger building. On 28 October 1873, he bought a building at Heuvelstraat 2491 (later 65). This building had previously been owned by his grandfather Theodorus Knegtel. In this building King Willem II stayed several times when it belonged to the van Dooren family.

In 1888 Leonardus went on a business trip to Belgium and died on the ·Äòtrekpad van de Maas·Äô after falling into the water.
