Translated from ·ÄúBij gelegenheid der onthulling van het door Charles Eijk vervaardigd oorlogsgrafmonument, Gemert 8 Juni 1947 (excerpt)
Paul van Oostveen was one of the brave ones, who held on to the castle stand, when on 11 May 1940 the German troops entered Gemert at 8:30 in the morning. Although they belonged to the genius, (Genie-detachement ·ÄúPeel-Divisie·Äù) the boys grabbed at the carbines because they didn't want to vomit. The Captain and Sergeant van Oostveen knew that whole morning that they were between the Germans and the Dutch front lines, because a policeman had told them that the Peeltroepen were over Zuid-Willemsvaart. After more than 3 hours, the commanding Captain was forced to raise the white flag, because of the fire.
Just before that, his confidant, Sergeant van Oostveen, was hit by a small grenade in the hip, while he was in the staircase of the south wing of the Jezuiten building. After surrender the fathers had to carry him to the outer avenue, where he was laid down on the lawn, halfway between the gatehouse and the iron entry gate. Several castle dwellers still had the privilege of speaking with this deeply believing Christian... he belonged to the reformed church... and assist him spiritually. He talked about how it was for his wife and child: he told in simplicity that he believed in God and had lived well and spoke the touching words: ·ÄúIf I go, I hope to come in the rich of God.·Äù The help of pastor C Verbeek could no longer benefit and after a few hours, 28-year-old Paul van Oostveen gave up the ghost, without anything noticeable.
He had written down his inner feelings days before on a postcard to his young wife: ·ÄúWhat has long been feared has become reality.
I am healthy and calm, we must know ourselves in God's hand, no matter what happens. Of course I hope that we may keep each other and continue with each other after the end of this terrible war. And above all sway, cheer together in heavenly paradise without war and disease. If you look at that beautiful nature, with that sun today, then you do not understand that it is reality, and that we are at war. When I come home again I hope not to miss one. May God bless you.·Äù
Gemert did a wonderful job for this Amsterdam boy. He was born in the capital on 16 December 1911. After leaving, with the best testimonials, from the MTS-Haarlem, he had entered the contracting business with his brother. He married on 15 January 1936 with P Capel, a teacher. He saw his first child, Bert, 5 days before his death. The second, Paula, was born after his death. The widow and the two children, respectively 8 and 6 years old, will come over for the unveiling with mother, brother and sister of the Sergeant. Although Paul was not a Catholic, we can safely say that he rests with three fellow believers. They have hoped and pursued the same thing, they have lived the same good life, they fought the same battle, they died the same death. May now the same angel of peace continue to protect their grave, so that the words of Paul come true, which he sang to the harmonium when he was on vacation on 6 May 1940: "in the storm God sends me peace."
