The VanderBands were introduced into the VanDommelen family when Peter's parents married. They were Dutch immigrants that came with other family and people from their communities in the Netherlands. They suffered the hardships that caused their immigration, then those that came with traveling the ocean in steerage, and again with beginning a new life in a foreign land and in this case they cameto the southwest side of Grand Rapids. In the years prior, a large swath of land in this area had become available for development and block by block homes were constructed to house the mostly immigrant population that staffed the factories and railroad in that area. Those that opted out of city life moved to the outskirts where they could farm. In this case, Peter's parents were citybound. In thefew records that are available, they were always found in Grand Rapids however Peter consistently reported that he was born in Kalamazoo even though his birth was recorded in Grand Rapids and the family was in Wyoming/GR in 1894 when he was about 2. This leads one to conclude that the VanderBands either lived in Kalamazoo before 1892 when he was born and his mother mistakenly at some point confused his birth location or he never thought to confirm the notion because his earliest personal memory was living there as a young child for a time. They have not yet been located in the 1900 census to see if there is a further clue. However by 1910 they were back in Wyoming/GR. His mother was widowed by then and he was her only surviving child of 8.
