Adelaide of Normandy (also called Adelais, Adélaïde, Adèle or Adeliza) (c. 1026 in Calvados, France - c. 1090) was the sister or half-sister of William the Conqueror.

She was the daughter of Robert the Magnificent, Duke of Normandy. Different chroniclers writing in the Gesta Normannorum Ducum call her sister of William the Conqueror by the same mother, or daughter of Robert by a different mother. She is usually said to be daughter of Herleva.

Adelaide married three times; first Enguerrand II of Ponthieu (died 1053) by whom she had issue; second Lambert II, Count of Lens (died 1054); and third in 1060 Odo II of Champagne son of the Count of Troyes, (Odo IV of Troyes).

She gained the title of Princess when William the Conqueror became King of England. She became Countess of Aumale when her husband Odo inherited the title of Count in 1069.

Parents: Robert 'le Magnifique' and (possibly) Herlève (or another mistress).

Spouse 1: Enguerrand
Children:

Guy de Montreuil
Adelaide de Montreuil

Spouse 2: Lambert de Bologne

Child: Judith

ADELAIS (-[1081/84]). Robert de Torigny names "Aeliz" as the daughter of Duke Robert II "de alia concubina" from Herleve[202]. She retained the title Comtesse d'Aumâle after her first marriage. The foundation charter of Saint-Martin d´Auchy names လEngueranni consulis qui filius fuit Berte supradicti Guerinfridi filie et Adelidis comitisse uxoris sue sororisဦWillelmi Regis Anglorumဝ[203]. Her second marriage is deduced from the same charter of Saint-Martin d´Auchy which also names လJudita comitissa domine supradicte filiaဝ[204]. Orderic Vitalis calls her "the king's sister" when referring to her marriage to Eudes Comte de Troyes[205].

m firstly ENGUERRAND [II] Comte de Montreuil, son of HUGUES de Ponthieu Comte de Montreuil & his wife Berthe d'Aum√¢le (-killed in battle Ch√¢teau d'Arques 25 Oct 1053).

Comte Enguerrand & his wife had three children:

a) GUY [I] de Montreuil (-13 Nov [1100], bur Abbéville, Saint-Pierre). A charter dated 1100 included in the cartulary of Saint-Josse records a grant of fishing rights by "Guido comes Monsteroli et Pontivensium" which names "Hugo noster avus" and "patre meo Ingerrano"[816]. This is inconsistent with the Chronique de Saint Riquier which records that "comte Gui fils du comte Hugues" succeeded after "Angelran son frère" was killed by the Normans and possessed the county of Ponthieu and the avouerie of Saint-Riquier[817]. It is assumed that the charter provides the more reliable record of Guy's parentage. Comte de Montreuil. Comte de Ponthieu.

- COMTES de PONTHIEU.

b) ADELAIDE de Montreuil . The foundation charter of Saint-Martin d´Auchy narrates the church´s foundation by လGuerinfrido qui condidit castellumဦAlbamarlaဝ and names လEngueranni consulis qui filius fuit Berte supradicti Guerinfridi filie et Adelidis comitisse uxoris sue sororisဦWillelmi Regis Anglorumဝ and လAddelidis comitissa supradicti Engueranni et supradicte Adelidis filiaဦJudita comitissa domine supradicte filiaဝ[818]. 1098.

Adélaïde m secondly ([1053/54]) LAMBERT de Boulogne Comte de Lens, son of EUSTACHE [I] Comte de Boulogne & his wife Mathilde de Louvain (-killed in battle Phalampin 1054).

Lambert & his wife had one child:

The foundation charter of Saint-Martin d´Auchy narrates the church´s foundation by လGuerinfrido qui condidit castellumဦAlbamarlaဝ and names လEngueranni consulis qui filius fuit Berte supradicti Guerinfridi filie et Adelidis comitisse uxoris sue sororisဦWillelmi Regis Anglorumဝ and လAddelidis comitissa supradicti Engueranni et supradicte Adelidis filiaဦJudita comitissa domine supradicte filiaဝ[310]. The Vita et Passio Waldevi Comitis records that လWaldevusဝ married လrex Willelmusဦneptem suam Juettam filiam comitis Lamberti de Lens, sororemဦStephani comitis de Albemarliaဝ[311]. A manuscript records that လJuditha comitissaဦuxor Waldevi comitis Huntingdon, et neptis Gulielmi Conquestorisဝ founded Elstow priory[312]. Her marriage is recorded by Orderic Vitalis who calls her the king's "consobrina"[313]. Orderic Vitalis says Waltheof's marriage with Judith was arranged by King William "to strengthen the bonds of friendship" with her future husband[314]. She deposed against her husband when he was accused of involvement in the conspiracy of the Earls of Norfolk and Hereford in 1075[315]. m (1070) WALTHEOF Earl of Huntingdon, son of SIWARD Earl of Northumbria & his wife Ælfled of Northumbria (-executed St Giles's Hill, Winchester 31 May 1076, bur Crowland Abbey).

Comte Eudes III & his wife had one child:

1. ETIENNE de Troyes (before 1070-before 1130, maybe [1127]). Albert of Aix names "Stephanus de Albemarla filius Udonis comitis de Campania" among those present with Adhémar Bishop of Le Puy on the First Crusade[558]. He succeeded his mother in [1082/84] as Comte dမAumâle. Florence of Worcester records that "Northymbrensis comes Rotbertus de Mulbrei et Willelmus de Owe" conspired against William II King of England in [1095], planning to place "filium amitæ illius Stephanus de Albamarno" on the English throne[559]. William of Tyre names Etienne Comte d'Albemarle among those who left on the First Crusade in 1096 with Robert Count of Flanders[560]. He was granted the lordship of Holderness in 1102. Orderic Vitalis reports that he supported Baudouin VII Count of Flanders and Guillaume "Clito" de Normandie against Henry I King of England in 1118[561]. A charter of King Henry II records donations to York St Mary, including the donation of လmanerium Horneshay et ecclesiamဦet Marram eius piscaturam et Thorp ibi juxtaဝ by လOdo comes et Stephanus filius eiusဝ and of လFulfordamဦဝ by လStephanus (de Albemarla)ဝ[562]. လStephanus, Albermarlensis comesဝ founded Saint-Martin, Aumâle by undated charter which names လmater mea AdelizaဦWillielmi regis Angliæ avunculi meiဝ[563]. m (before [1100]) HAWISE de Mortimer, daughter of RALPH de Mortimer of Wigmore, Herefordshire & his first wife Mélisende --- (before 1088[564]-).
