Tailor by trade. Never workedafter arriving in USA he received some sort of pension from Holland.Had to go to Port Washington to pick up the money.
Bought 80 ac. in Town of Holland, Sheboygan Co.,on the County Line and the old STH 32.Interstate I-43 now cuts thru theeast portion of the property.Old maps show over half of the land was covered in cedar trees.Small stream in low area. In 1878 he moved with oldest son, A.L., to Firth, NE., and lived with oldest daughter,Sarah Fangeman .He died in either Firth or Cedar Grove, between 1880and 1885.Strong rumor has it that he is buried in Cedar Grove in WalvoordCem.Unfortunately most headstoneswere lost or destroyed in the late1940's when the State made the Village clean up the cemetery. In 1998 I talked to a man in his 80's who wasa retired Village worker whohelped clean up cem.It was full of brush, the graves were sinking and most of the stones were broken off, unreadable or missing.He said that they set up stones that they found as closeto graves as they could, but he knowsthat a lot were put on the wrong graves.A.P. Monteba and 5 children were listed in 1850 census and 1855 census. The 1860 Census lists just him at age 51 and his son Jacob age 12.A.P., A.L. and Jacob in 1870 census.1880 census of NE lists the Monteba clan.Special Census of 1885 in Wisconsin and Nebraska does not listAbram Pieter Monteba.

Family oral history had it that he was a mayor in a city outside of Amsterdam.That is wrong. I received info from Pim and Rhinus
Monteba in Holland who had investigated that story and found out the following;
"Abraham P. Monteba was a tailor by trade.On 2-8-1837 he became a follower of Dr. Scholte.Scholte studied theology1827/1828
in Amsterdam and in 1829 in Leiden.He was a ' "Reformed minister" ' in Doeveren and Genderen in 1833.He started a splinter
group of strict religous beliefs and had a small following.In 1838 Abraham P. Monteba became the "elder' or deacon of the group
when a man named van Hall , who was the elder died.The group had 52 people including 31 children.The Dutch Reformed Church
would not recognize this group and punished them and made life difficult. This was between 1838 and 1842.The group Scholte
started to break up.The elders were A. Monteba, P. Hoogendoorn and J. Toet. In 1844 these elders were singled out by the official Reformed Church and it caused most of the group to return to the Church.Becoming anoutcast of the Church the elders were forced to leave the country or conform to the dictates of the Reformed Church."The Rev. Scholte left Holland in 1847 for America.According to my 3rd cousin, Shirley Sager, Scholte stopped for a short time in
Cedar Grove but moved on to Pella, Iowa, as most well to do Hollanders did.In 1860 he was elected a Republican representative to the
Republican National Convention.He died in 1868 in Pella.
