There is a Harm Jans van Niezijl (coming from the town of Niezijl), nea
r Ezinge.Type: Crest COAT OF ARMS: In a silver field a green tree on green soil, w
ith (heraldic) at the right, a fox, and at the left, a stag, both in red, and climbing the trunk of the tree.
This is based on the seal of Rev. Hermanus Beekhuis; clippings were made , which in 1850 were distributed among members of the family by his grandson, C.H.Beekhuis.
(Citation - colors from Kolonel Steenkamp page 126) Type: Abt Family The name probably did not become officially Beekhuis unt
il early 19th. Century. In 1806 Groningen imposed a surname and registry of records (births, deathes, Marriages) because they were instituting an inheritance tax. In 1811 by Napoleonic order everyone was required to adopt an official name and they had to register births, deaths and marriages. Prior to that they used mainly first names and the patronymic name as the 'surname'.
There is no definite information about the origin of the family, but i t is probably outside of Friesland probably in the area along the border of Groningen (NL) and Papenburg (Germany). The town was called Beekhuis (Beek = English 'Brook'; Huis = English 'House'); this town no longer exists. According to old genealogies, from there he went to Lingen, which is now on the German side in the province of Niedersachsen. At that time Lingen had a state garrison, so that either he or his father is supposed to have been sent there from the western provinces, serving in the military.
In this Family Tree we are only exploring the Beekhuis family fro m the NE of the Netherlands. That family later moved to Blijham, a few kilometers west but what is now Nederland.
There appear to be several extensive branches of the Beekhuis fa mily, originating in what is currently part of the Netherlands; one part appears to be further south towards the Veluwe - Gelderland, Drenthe and Utrecht (perhaps totally separate branches). Another branch comes from the provinces of Groningen and Friesland - we are part of that branch.
I have found another branch almost entirely from Groningen and apparent ly not related to our Frisian branch.
