MAE SULKERS February 23, 1925 - June 16, 2006 Mae passed away peacefully in her sleep Friday, June 16, 2006.
It was always her wish to spend her remaining years in her home in East St. Paul that she and Al built in 1957. Mae was born and raised in Winnipeg lived and went to school in the Elmwood and Norwood areas, but settled in East St. Paul where she raised her five children. Mom was full of life, if there was a party to be found, she was there. She loved people, was a tireless worker and her door was always open and everyone was welcome at her table. In her earlier years, Mom spent her leisure time knitting and sewing for the kids. Later in her life she had more time to return to her love of painting. She loved cars, dogs and good steak.
Mom was a fighter and overcame many obstacles including Polio as a teenager, the death of her husband at an early age, stomach cancer, a debilitating stroke and most recently lung cancer. Throughout this time her spirit remained strong and she was always concerned more about the misfortunes of others than about herself.
During her life she had many jobs including modelling as a teenager for the Eaton's catalogue, real estate agent and merchandiser at Sears Canada; but her passion was her volunteer work which included the Home and School Association, Red River Teeners and later in retirement, East St. Paul Victim Services. Throughout her years family and friends were the main thrust in her life. Visits and calls from her children and grandchildren were bright spots in her day.
Mom was predeceased by her husband Al Sulkers (1970); her longtime friend, Vern Nielson (2003); her parents, Ted and Alma Blackwell (1964 and 1973); her sister Noel English (1974) and her son-in-law Jack Winship (1994). Mom will be fondly remembered by her children, Judy Winship, Bob (Nancy) Sulkers, Jan (Tom) Anderson, Randy (Judy) Sulkers and Kim (Larry) Dyck; her grandchildren, John (Tina) Winship, Jennifer Sulkers and Dante, Jodi Anderson and Kevin, Jason (Caroline) Winship, Wesley Anderson, Jonathan Dyck, Robyn (Jason) Sneath, Dustin Sulkers and Celine, David Dyck and Shauna Sulkers. Great-grandchildren are Mikayla Lanoie, Paige, Jayde, Colin and Avery Winship; niece and nephew, Brian (Val) English and April English and John, and their families.
The family wishes to thank her home care workers and her special friend Sue Skuland. A celebration of Mom's life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 20 at Calvary Temple, 400 Hargrave St., Winnipeg, MB (943-4551). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society or to a charity of your choice in Mom's name.
