"In Commemoration of Jan Mast and Jantje Mast Nee Smit", a family history found at Herrick Library, Holland: "Then they went by ox-carts to the home of Hilbert Mast who had arrived in Drenthe, Michigan in the year of 1847. Hilbert Mast lived 1 1/4 mile west of Drenthe. He had 160 acres of land. They bought 90 acres of land of Hilbert Mast.... (The relationship of Jan to Hilbert was not documented, but they were probably brothers or cousins. My ancestor, Roelof Mast, is also assumed to have been either a brother or cousin. Hilbert and Roelof are buried in the same cemetery. I also assume that Hilbert and Roelof were from Staphorst.)
