Gazzam, b. 8th May, 1836; d. 1oth May, 1884; Major 1o3rd Regt. Penna. Volunteers;
Brevet Brigadier General; Attorney-at-Law; m. 6th Dec, i86o, Mary Elizabeth, b. 2nd
April, 1841; d. 12th April, 1871, daughter of Edwin Martin Van Deusen, of Great
Barrington, Mass., by Eliza Maria Gilbert, his wife, of Dutchess Co., N.Y.—Descended
from William Gazzam, Jr., an English Journalist, b. in Cambridge, who espoused the
American cause, incurred the enmity of George III., and was forced to Bee; arrived in
Philadelphia, and went thence to Pittsburgh, of which port he was appointed first
Collector by President Madison; d. in Pittsburgh, 1811. His son, Dr. Edward Despard
Gazzam, m. Elizabeth Antoinette de Beelen, a direct descendant of Baron Frederic Eugene
Francies de Beelen Bertholff, who was sent by Joseph II., Emperor of Austria, as the first
Resident Minister of that country to the United States, 1783-87).
