Notities over Lt. Denys Nye Nyssen Denyse

There are alot of errors about This Cortelyou and Denyse line -----------------------

Helena Cortelyou was NOT the 3rd wife of Denys Denyse bapt 1654. Helena Cortelyou married 1st Cornelius Rutgersz Van Brunt. He died. Her second marriage was to Denys Denyse who was baptized 12 april 1654 son of Teunis Nyssen. Denys Denyse line is the only child of Teunis Nyssen to use Denyse. When Denys Denyse died in abt 1706, Helena married 3rd to Hendrick Hendrickson.

Denys Denyse bapt 1654 was married first 22 Oct 1682 in Flatbush Dutch Reformed Church, NY , to Elizabeth Polhemus. At the time, he was using the surname Tunisz. Elizabeth Polhemus died about 1685 (no one has a date of birth for Elizabeth Polhemus. She seems to be the daughter of Rev Johannes Theodorus Polhemus. Denys Denyse 1654 and Elizabeth Polhemus had no children.
All the children of Denys Denyse bapt 1654 are from his second wife Helena Cortelyou.

Denys Denyse married 2nd Helena Cortelyou. It says on his marriage license 12 April 1685 in the Flatbush Dutch Reformed Church, NY, to Helena that Denys Tunicz is the widow of Elizabeth Polhemus , and says Helena Corteljou , widow of Claus Rutgerz, (this is Claus Rutgerz Van Brunt) This shows they were both widows and this was their second marriage. Denys Denys born 1654 died in 1706 and then Helena Cortelyou married 3rd Hendrick Hendrickson . Denys Denyse bapt 1654 was only married twice. Helena Cortelyou was married 3 times . In 1708, Helena writes a letter that her son Jacques Denyse (born 1686) and her son in law Hendrick Liouwres will be taking charge of her estate. I have no real documented date of death for Helena Cortelyou. Could you share the document that says Helena died 1726? some have about 1726, some have abt 1720 . I have not seen any document for the 1726 death. If you have one, can you please share it ??

Also, Teunis Nyssen used the name Teunis Nyssen on every document. Three of his sons changed their name. The Patronymic naming pattern of the Dutch was to take the first name of the father and make it their last name every genration. Sometimes they added son at the end. This would mean that Teunis 's children would take Tunis or Tunison , But the English took over the Dutch colonies in 1664? and made the Dutch stop the Patronymic naming system because the English found it difficult to tax them since they had a different name every generation .

Jan bapt 12 April 1654 New Amsterdam ( now Manhattan, NY) used Tunisz when he was married to Catalyntje Bogaert in 1679; When Jan Van Middleswaert bought land in New Jersey intially about 1686 with his brother Cornelius Tunison , Jan and Cornelius both used Tunison on the land record ; but by 1699, Jan is seen in a land document in New Jersey as using Van Middleswaert meaning "from Middlewout" or "From Flatbush". Cornelius their younger brother born 1657 was using the name Tunison in 1686 when they bought land on the Raritan, and continued to keep the surname Tunison in the 1699 land record , and so did Cornelius's descendants keep Tunison. Cornelius married Neelje Bogaert, his brother Jan's wife's sister.

Denys bapt 12 April 1654 and his descendants are the only line in the family that used Denyse as a surname. I know people from all these lines. Denys Denyse was in Bay Ridge and some of his descendants went to Monmouth New Jersey. Cornelius Tunison 1657 And brother Jan Van Middleswaert born 1654 bought land in Middlesex County NJ , which became Somerset County NJ and they lived on the Raritan River .

There is just alot of errors out there. People are copying each others bad information. Denyse, Tunison and Van Middleswaert cousins have been in contact with each other. These are 3 different lines with 3 different surnames and all or the Tunison, Van Middleswaert and Denyse are from the same Teunis Nyssen.

As time went on, some later changes in the name occurred. Some Denyse are spelled Denise, some Van Middleswaert changed to van Middlesworth and some took the Van Off the last name and made it Middleswart, Middleswarth or Middlesworth. Tunison might be spelled Teunissen. Spelling changed in those days might have been to fit in where you lived, or to distinguish which line you were from. It was a blessing that each line changed their surname -----it even helped us find which line we were from.
