Rudolf (Rudy) Edward Schutter, 86, loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, was called home March 8, 2015. Rudolf was born to Niklaas and Roelfien (Dreise) Schutter on April 4, 1928, in Bozeman, Montana.
Rudy was raised in Kamp Creek, west of four corners, where he attended Vincent School. He then started farming with his father and his brother, Jake Schutter, in Whitehall, Montana. In 1945, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corp during WWII, which started his lifelong love of airplanes and flying, as well as an opportunity to travel see new places. He was honorably discharged in 1948 after reaching the rank of Sergeant. He returned home to farm with Jake on Cottonwood Road in Bozeman until his death. Along with farming, he completed a career at MSU and the Bozeman Public Schools from which he retired.
Rudolf married Mary K. Lindvig in 1956 and they later divorced; they had three children, Betty, Joyce and Jerry. Rudy continued raising his children as a single father, having a lasting influence on their lives.He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Bozeman, The Gallatin Valley Civil Air Patrol and the Montana Farmers Union.
He was a lifelong farmer and also enjoyed flying airplanes, wood working, gardening, and spending time at the Kountry Korner Cafe "Coffee Think Tank", where he helped his friends solve most of the world's problems.
He was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother, Jacob, brother, Jake Schutter, sisters, Grace Svensrud and Jeannie Clausen, and twin sister, Ruby Stublar.
He is survived by his three children, Betty Roelfina Scollard (Jim), Joyce Kathryn McCarver (Mel), and Gerald (Jerry) Edward Schutter, all of Bozeman; six grandchildren, James E. Scollard III (Channel) of Atlanta, Georgia, Daniel J. Scollard (Rosie) of Duncan, Oklahoma, Nicholas T. Scollard (Katie) of Bozeman, Amanda K. Hanson (Brendan) of Bozeman, Adam W. McCarver (Kara Huyser) of Bozeman, and Justin E. Schutter of Bozeman; six great-grandchildren; and nephew, Arnold (Lee) Svensrud of Bridger, Montana.
Dad, thank you for giving us everything. We love you and will miss you always.
Please join us for a graveside service on Saturday, March 21, 2015, at 12:30 p.m. at Hills Cemetery in Churchill, followed by a Celebration of Life at the Kountry Korner Cafe from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
