Here follow some excerpts from the booklet "The Pieter Rus Family" written by John W. Kuipers 124.
It was May 30, 1893, when the Dutch ocean liner "Maasdam" steamed into the busy New York harbor. Among those standing at the rail, excitedly watching the harbor activities: the boats, the ferries, the skyline, the palissades, was the Pieter Rus family. There were nine of them in all. Pieter, the father, and Aletta Johanna, the mother, and seven children. […]The Pieter Rus family had come from the Haarlemmermeer area of North Holland in the Netherlands. They had been living on a small farm located on the Hoofdvaart (main canal), and a road called the Vijfhuizer Weg (road of the five houses) in the Haarlemmermeer area. […] The Rus family came there in 1855, and the family of Mrs. Rus, the Vanden Heuvels's, arrived in the area too, around 1869. […]
Pieter Rus showed in many ways that he was a very wise and careful man. Now, too [after having been interviewed and examined by the immigration authorities at Ellis Island], before making any firm decision about where to settle in the U.S., he decided to take enough time to find out more information about the best prospects and opportunities for his family. […] So Pieter Rus's first decision was to go to the nearest city where there were people of his own nationality and faith, and stay there temporarily until he had obtained sufficient information for him to make a decision about where to settle permanently. So he and his family boarded the train at the Erie Railroad Station at Hoboken and made the short trip of about an hour to Paterson, New Jersey.
In Paterson, in the period of the early 1890's, the families of Dutch descent were grouped together largely in the area of Straight Street and along the Passaic River in that vicinity, and northward up the Haledon Avenue hill toward Prospect Park. The first Christian Reformed Church of Paterson had been in existence for some time and, at the time the Rus family arrived, the Rev. P. Van Vlanderen was the pastor of the church. The people of this church assisted the Rus's in obtaining a place. […] He [Pieter Rus] decided to send letters to relatives and church people in the midwest, to ask for further information about prospects for farming and for the future. […] The person writing from Pella, Iowa, gave a glowing account of the good living conditions, the productivity of the soil, thebountiful crops. Here too there were established churches of the Reformed and Christian Reformed denominations. So it was not difficult to decide that Pella, Iowas should be their destination. […] So in early August, 1893, they arrived in Pella. They immediately affiliated with the First Christian Reformed Church in Pella and, after getting settled, the search was begun for a farm.
One man in Pella with whom Pieter Rus became friendly, was an attorney, Peter Gaas. Peter Gaas's son was married tot the daughter of the pioneer leader of the group that first settled in Pella, the Rev. Henry Scholte. Mr. Gaas informed Pieter that he knew of a farm near Pella that had recently been sold to another Dutchman. The purchaser had paid down $1000, but wanted to back out of the deal when he heard more about the neighborhood around the farm. The farm was located ten miles east of Pella, on the east side of the Skunk River. The community in that vicinity was known as Lower Grove. It had a rough reputation. The citizens there were said to be more interested in drinking, gambling and fighting than in farming. […] Pieter Rus, however, was not intimidated by the luridstories about the people living near the farm. […] The farm acquired by Pieter Rus must have consisted of two parcels, which added up to a total of 210 acres. According to a deed signed on December 15, 1893, one portion of the farm, consisting of 90.7 acres, was purchased by Pieter Rus from Horace C. Lindley for the sum of $3300. It is said that Pieter and Aletta had funds of about $10,000with them when they came from Holland, and this was used to cover the farm purchase.
