DAUGHTER WIJNANDA VLOOSWIJK marries Anthonie Baars in 1790. They live in Zeist, but later move. Anthonie dies in Jutphaas, and Wijnanda dies in Renswoude. Even before they married they jointly sign a lease for a farm, barns and bakery and 91 morgen of land in Bunnik, first with Willen Nicolaas Pesters and later with his widow Isabella van Westrenen. That lease also contains rent in kind, as many did: 3 bales of straw, 6 pair of chicken and 11 days of driving the landlord and his family around with horse and cart.

Like Arie among the Vlooswijk, each generation and almost each family of Baars has an Anthonie. It was not easy to identify the ones that refer to Wijnanda’s Anthonie. Three documents concern this lease, which was last renewed in 1802. One is about their prenuptial, and one is the will of Anthonie’s aunt Cornelia Baars, who reveals herself as a very religious woman. One document is statement concerning a transfer of land.

Anthonie is the son of Anthonie Baars and Geertruij van Rijn, sister of Anthonie van Rijn who marries Wijnanda Noordeloos. Antonie Baars is the grandson of Anthonie Baars and Johanna Pouw, who descends from the Pauw (two routes) and Bieser ancestors that we have via Anna Vermeulen. There are many links with this lineage of Baars families. Daughter Cornelia Baars married Hendrik Zwambach, grandson of ancestors Abraham Swambach and Garrigjen Matheisen van Rooijen.

Goyert van Schaik acts as guardian of his niece Wijnanda Vlooswijk, who is leasing a little over 91 morgen land in Bunnik en Stoetwegen, plus a house, two farmsteads, a barn and pigeon house, together with her future husband Anthony Baars. The lease is for 6 years. The rent is Fl 1,200, at 13 guilders a morgen, plus a few items in kind. The land is owned by Willem Nicolaas Pesters, but his manager Wouter van Dam acts on his behalf. The conditions are the same as in other lease contracts, but much more detailed. The manner in which land, dykes and buildings are to be maintained or improved is detailed, as is who pays for what. One notices the influence of a professional estate manager acting on his master’s behalf.

Nine months after leasing 91 morgen of land and farmhouses in Bunnik, i.e. after moving in with each other, Wijnanda and Anthonie marry. Goyert van Schaik is Wijnanda’s guardian and her assistant at the signing. Their prenuptial is simple: a) full community of all goods, those brought into the marriage and those acquired during; b) in the case of either dying and there are no children, the other inherits all, except the clothes which have to be divided among friends within three months of the first one dying; c) in case of either dying and there are children, the suriving one gets full usufruct of the goods; d) in the case of four or fewer children their combined legitimate share is one third of the estate, in the case of five or more children it is half the estate; e) either appoints the other as guardian of the underage children should one die before the other.

Wijnanda and Anthonie renew the lease, this time from Isabella van Westrenen, widow of Willem Nicolaas Pesters, represented by estate manager Wouter van Dam. The lease is on a farm called Rumst, with barns and a bakery plus other outbuildings, and over 90 morgen land located in Bunnik. The rent is Fl 13 a morgen, all told Fl 1,200. There is some rent in kind: 3 bales of straw, 11 days of driving a horse and cart for the landlady and 6 pairs of young chicken. The tenants shall keep the buildings weather proof and supply the materials and labour, and maintain the pumps. The landlady supplies the thatch and the tenants the labour. The tenants keep on the land the wood cut off 4 or 5 year old trees, except that of certain trees, plus the trees the landlady commands to be cut because they block her view. The landlady is entitled to plant trees along the ditches. The tenants shall fill all potholes in the roads leading off the river Kromme Rijn, so the landlady and her family can travel across them comfortably. They shall clear all mole-hills, ant nests and weeds, and use sludge from the Kromme Rijn to fertilise the land. They are not allowed to cut hay on the meadows without prior written consent, but shall supply sods of grass as required, for which they get paid. They shall keep all the dung on the land, and supply the landlady the dung she needs for her gardens at Wulperhorst. If unavailable they can dredge sludge from the Rhine or aquire fertiliser elsewhere, for which they get paid. Then there are the usual conditions about maintenance of the land and payment-cum-compensation for planted and sown crops at the start and end of the lease.

Not sure if we are talking of Wijnanda’s Anthonie. But this Anthonie is from Bunnik and Vechten, and Wijnanda’s Anthonie spells his name differently in different signatures: Antoni, Anthoni, Antonij. However, one Anthonie from Bunnik apparently had bought 3 morgen of land in Schonauwen (Houten) which one Jacob van Heus held in fief from the lord of Schonauwen. In this statement Anthonie and Jacob appoint Lodewijk de Mil to see the lord of Schonauwen and request him to transfer the fief.

Wijnanda and Anthonij extend the lease of a farm, barns, bakery and 91 morgen of land for another six years, 5 morgen less. The rent in cash and kind is increased: Fl 1,300, plus 3 bales of straw, 14 days of riding a cart with 2 horses, 6 pairs of chickens and 2 sweet cheeses, the largest they make. The other conditions remain almost the same.

Aunt Cornelia Baars writes her will in 1804, but she does not die until 1816. Apparently she and husband Matthijs van Rooijen had no children. She leaves most to siblings, nephews and nieces, though she clearly has her favourites. The document reveals Cornelia as a very religious woman.

Matthijs den Hartog and Cornelia den Hartog children of Gerrit den Hartog and Maria Baars get 12 morgen of land in Schalkwijk. Cornelia also gets Cornelia’s golden necklace. The Roman Catholic church of Vreeswijk gets Fl 500, which she had lent it, on condition that the priest holds a commemoration mass with 12 candles every year for 12 years. The RC Poor Relief of Vreeswijk gets Fl 500 in cash. The RC Poor Relief of Schalkwijk gets Fl 300 in cash. The priest of the RC church in Vreeswijk is also requested to hold 200 masses for her soul plus a so-called ‘moon watch’ and mass once a month over 12 months, and the priest of the RC church in Schalkwijk is requested to hold 100 masses for her soul; to be paid from her estate. Brother Bernardus gets one third of what remains. The children of her dead brother Anthonie, who include Wijnanda’s Anthonie, together get one third. Cornelia is to be buried in Tull en ‘t Waal, and Gerrit den Hartog is charged to receive the funeral guests at his house and serve enough food and drink, for which he receives Fl 100. Her brother Bernardus, her nephew Anthonie (Wijnanda’s) and one Bastiaan van der Worp are appointed executors, funeral directors and guardians over any underage heirs, for which they each receive Fl 100.
