Prudon, Gijsbertus & Guillemine Jeanne Elisabeth (Visser)
When the war broke out, Gijsbertus and Guillemine Prudon were living in Soest, Utrecht, with their young son, Reiner. When they saw what was being done to the Jews, the couple contacted an underground group and told them they would be willing to hide Jews in their home. In 1942, the Prudons took in Bertha Verkozen-Meibergen and shortly afterward, Jacques Themans and his wife, Gertrude (Godschalk). In the summer of 1942, Berthas niece, Dora Mendels (later Spangenthal-Mendels), who was living in Amsterdam, received an order to report to the Hollandsche Schouwburg for work in the east. Dora immediately contacted her aunt and asked whether Mr. Prudon would be able to find a hiding place for her and her sister, Therese. Gijsbertus traveled to Amsterdam to get the women and take them into hiding, but Therese was not home at the time. He decided to accompany Dora to Soest without her sister. He returned to Amsterdam the next day to pick her up, but they were arrested by the Gestapo at the central station in Amsterdam and taken away for interrogation. Therese Mendels eventually convinced the Germans that she did not know Gijsbertus and he was released. She was later transported to the Sobibor death camp, from where she never returned. On arriving home, Gijsbertus moved the three Jews who were hiding in his home to other addresses. He stayed in touch with them, helping out with food coupons and false identity cards wherever possible. In September 1944, Germans soldiers were quartered in the house where Dora was now hiding. When Gijsbertus found out, he rushed over after the night curfew to sneak Dora out and bring her to his home. There she joined a Mr. and Mrs. Roos, who were then hiding with the Prudons. Although the refugees could contribute little to their upkeep and despite the Prudons modest means, the couple always shared the little they had. During the notorious hunger winter of 1944--1945, Guillemine traveled long distances on her bicycle to exchange clothing and valuables for food with farmers in the area. She was often stopped and questioned by German police. The Prudons house was always open to all those in need, including railroad strikers, who only stayed for a few days at a time.
On May 11, 1980, Yad Vashem recognized Gijsbertus Prudon and his wife, Guillemine Jeanne Elisabeth Prudon-Visser, as Righteous Among the Nations. ]
