He was born in 1822 as Johannes van der Meer (= of the Lake) in the Dutch southwestern province Zuid-Holland.
Fishbuyer Johannes van der Meer, residing at Overschie, married on 24 Jul 1846 at the age 24 years to the half year younger Margje Hazenbroek at her birthplace Berkel en Rodenrijs in province Zuid-Holland.
In 1849 his parents and siblings emigrated to the Dutch settlement Pella, founded in 1847, in Marion County, Iowa. I. van der Meer (48 y, farmer), his wife Adriana (48 y) and their children Derk (21 y), Leendert (18 y), Antje (18 y), Maria (16 y), Neeltje (11 y), Izaak (10 y), Frans (7 y) and Alida (4 y), all from Overschie, arrived on or a few days before 29 June 1849 on the brig Amicitia at the harbor of Philadelhia, Pennsylvania.
Son J[ohannes] van der Meer (26 y, farmer) and his wife Maria (26 y) [Margje Haze(n)broek], both from Overschie too, sailed on the same ship, that had in total 53 passengers on board, all from Lekkerkerk and Berkel and Overschie.
Mariegie Hassebroek remarried on 13 June 1850 in Marion County, Iowa to Are Notaboom (= Dutch for Nut tree). So it's very likely that her husband Johannes van der Meer died there before in the last half of 1849 or in the beginning of 1850.
