The ages in the federal Census from 1900 to 1930 are consistent with one another as well as the ages of the children, although since 1910, nick names were used for the children. The number of years married was inconsistent between census records. They were probably married when Jannetje was under 13 yrs, but at least sometime between 1877 and 1888. The birth date/age for Jannetje reported on all the Census records are consistent with the Dutch registry records. Common law marriages were legal.
Jacob Van Zanten was 20 years older that his wife. One record does exist in the Dutch Registry listed under his name. The Dutch birth record and the US 1900 Census dates do match, as the 1900 Census states that Jacob was born in October of 1849, and the birth record states that the Jacob listed here was born October 10, 1849. To begin my search for Jacobs parents, I used the Dutch protocol for naming children. Jakob used this protocol for the matriarchal line. I found the Dutch record not by going by date, but by matching the name of the first son and the first daughter to get the first names of Jakob's father and mother. Once I found this record, I then matched up the dates, and found them to coincide with one another. In addition, the names of the children of Willem Zanten's children are carried over to the names in Jakob's family. This is a good start to verifying Jacobs parents. There is room for error. One could consult the church records or death certificate for Jacob if these records could be located.
From the Sioux County Historical Records: "Although two Holland speaking churches provided Orange City with religious services, the need of services in the English language for the benefit of the younger generation of Holland-Americans, and for the sake of such families in the community as did not understand Dutch, soon became evident. English services provided by the First Reformed Church once a month on Sunday evening, did not meet the need, although much appreciated. Finally the Rev. John A. De Spelder took up the matter and a petition for an English speaking Reformed Church was circulated and then presented to the Iowa classis. In the meantime preaching services were begun, March 7th, 1885, in the County Court House. The classis of Iowa, through a committee of which the Rev. A. Buursma was chairman, organized the new church on April 27th, 1885, the charter members numbering twenty-one. Jacob J. Van Zanten was elected elder and James M. Oggel, deacon. These officers were installed May 3rd, 1885. The new organization adopted the name, The American Reformed Church of Orange City, Iowa." The Illustrated Historical Atlas of Sioux County Iowa
