Note of mistaken identity: A few resources available on Ancestry in 2007/2008 list Dirk Scholten and Grada Johanna Koerselman as my great great grandfather. This did not make sense, because this family has used the standard protocol used in the Gelderland for naming children. On this basis, since my grandfather was William Karel Scholten, and since he was the first born son of Gerrit Scholten, our great great gandfather's name should be William (Willem), not Dirk or Richard. Techniques used to verify this error came from the death records available in Sioux County, Iowa, were William was living, collaboration form other memembers of Willem Karel and Hermana Scholten and an extensive research of all of the persons named "Willem Karel" and "Gerrit Jan" Scholten in both Sioux County, Roseland, MI and in the Gelderland, Holland. This research was designed to disprove the herritage by finding the notations of birth for all of these individuals. Thus, these family lines are now part of my database.
Personal Notes: Willem Karel Scholten was the son of Dirk Jan Scholten and Jennekin Struikman, of Zutphen, Holland. He married his cousin Hermanna in 1849. They had, all totaled, nine children, but only three survived to adulthood. Willem was a foreman in a winery. The owners became concerned about the excessive drinking of some of the employees and demanded that they all sign pledges that they would drink no more than two glasses of wine a day. Willem refused to do this as he felt that he was obliged to taste the wine in the vats to make sure of it;s proper fermentation. Refusing this, his employment was terminated. He was able to farm with his brothers, but was not making a good living at this, and hearing about better conditions in the United States, emigrated with others from Zutphen in 1870.
Willem and his family emigrated to the US in February of 1870 on the Zwaanendam, landing in Castle garden in Battery Park, Manhattan, NY after a voyage of 18 days. He celebrated his 44th birthday aboard ship. They settled in Roseland, IL, a section of Chicago. Here Wm K and his son Dirk became construction workers, assisting to build the famous skyscrapers of the day.
According to Jenny Scholten's (Granddaughter of son Dirk) family historical records, Willem died of lip cancer. Little is known of his funeral or death, but this notice was obtained concerning the even from the Sioux County Herald archives: Newspaper Notice, Sioux County Harold [social notice, not Obituary], 4/30/1902:" Wednesday afternoon occurs the funeral of W. K. Scholten who died last Monday. Mr Scholten died from weakness in old age and could claim kin with nearly all the Scholten families near this place. His remains go to their final rest from the Dutch Reformed Church of this City." (Many thanks to L Vanderlinden, who provided a copy to me through Ancestry.com). I located an article in the Sioux County Herald, on June 5th, 1901, where it is noted that "W. K. Scholten who is suffering from cancer of the lip was accompanied by Mr Lepeltak to Cherokee, IA a few weeks ago where he remained for treatment. Recent letters are not very encouraging as to his improvement there.
Wm K, Hermanna, Gerrit Jan are listed as living in the northern 8th of the SW corner of one of the townships in Floyd County. George Scholten notes that crops that were very good in 1875 were demolished by locust. Many Hollanders left, but William and Hermanna were too poor to move. Their son Dirk, who had been attending the seminary, came back from Michigan to teach in a school near Plankington, SD.
Citation: Sioux County Herald June 5 1901: WK Scholten, who is suffering from cancer of the lip, was accompanied by Mr Lepeltak to Cherokee a few weeks ago where he remained for treatment. Recent letters are not very encouraging as to his improvement there.
I have tracked the name William back to Roelof Scholten. I have not been able to determine where the name "Karel" comes in, possibly from Jenneken Stuikman's family, but more likely from the ancestor, Derk Scholten and Helliken Mennink, who were the Scholts ofKeppel Manor, a residence owned by the family of King Willem and his brother Phillip Karel. The names Willem and Karel became popular around that time, and Derk may have felt indbted to Phillip Karel for his coveted position as Scholt of the mannor. However, we have listed in church baptismal records, a "Carel Scholten" born in the 1700's. I will be checking this out.
Will Scholten (William, Willem)-first cousin to John (Jan) Scholten. Will's father, Gerrit Jan Scholten, was a brother to Jenneken Scholten, John (Jan) Scholten's mother. In an old family photograph taken in the Netherlands (Zutphen), the family is shown with fabric draped over the grass near the bleachery. They were bleachers by trade. Cloth would be stretched out in the sun to bleach white. Will Scholten is the baby shown in this particular photograph. Hattie Scholten created a painting of this photograph later in life.
